Salt Air???

Per my porevious post, I bought my wife a G9 for Christmas, and she is LOVING it!!!!! As she has been pouring over the manual, one thing it mentions is to keep the camera out of salt air. It recommends buying the underwater case to protect it from salt air (not just the water), but this seems ridiculous.

I realize the possible hazard of salt air to the camera and sensor, but this seems somewhat farfetched to believe that nobody would use it at a beach! Anyone have a G9 they take to the beach, or other thoughts on this?

i don't have a G9, but i took my canon S40 to the beach once and it got all wonky and wouldn't work. started fine after a couple of hours without the battery in it.


took my xti out into the ocean a couple hundred feet once with no problems whatsoever. calm day, very few waves.

There is a fine salt mist in the air that corrodes things. Consumer models are not sealed well.

The is a chance that the salt water mist in the air can mess up your camera. But this hardly requires the underwater case - try a Ziploc bag with a hole cut in it instead.

I had the same idea with the Ziplock and just using that. Seems kind of crazy that you couldn't use a camera at the beach.

Not that it pertains to your G9, but I shoot down at the beach in all weather with my D80 and it just eats it up...

If the manual told me to do stuff to protect it, I'd make some attempt to do so, I guess, as per bunny's suggestions...

dug dug, what eats it up? Does the D80 eat up the weather (meaning there's no problem), or does the weather eat up the D80?

I shoot with my SLRs at the ocean. I've even camped out on the beach and my cameras were stored during the night without any kind of protection. When I got up that morning I was sticky from the salt, and my sleeping bag and tent were all sticky. The cameras were fine.
