Years ago I always knew I would suck at a sales job that works minimum wage plus commision.

So I took the job anyway just to see if I could hack it.

Turns out anyone can do it. If anything there is no trick to the trade really.
Just be the first to pick up the phone if your calls are routed to a pool of sales people.

In my case the manager who hired me put me at his desk as he could see everyone from his desk and since I was trial by fire this also meant the others would coach me on what to say properly and such like canned responses and such for cold calls.

I caught on pretty fast and even the manager did not know this but after 2 weeks I found the secret and I was making more money than anyone.

Nobody who sat at the desk put 2 and 2 together. In my case it was sheer luck!

Under the managers desk was the junction box to where it would branch out to all the other phones.

The trick I learned was the little box would silently buzz and I rested my foot on it and could feel it tingle before any phone would ring and so pretty soon
I was answering phones even before it would ring.

Manager started getting complaints and even some would yell at me , "I got mouths to feed at home! Give me a chance!"

I started making 3 times more than the average guy and making more than the manager.

Do any of you have funny sales commision stories?

There are lots of different types of sales jobs. I'm really good at some and suck at others. I couldn't (bores me to death) sell food to a starving man on the phone but I can sell anything in person.

I've seen way too many people suck at it to think that anyone can do it. I'm simply amazed at how the most basic things like asking for the sale elude people. Others simply don't have the persona to do it.

Your little trick though is brilliant. The key is to figure out the system and exploit it if needed. I once had a sales job where the commission setup was super complex so I sat down and figured out how to min/max it. I quit soon after for another job but found out afterwards that they had to change their whole commission schedule due to me. Fuck em. They wanted people to have gross sales of over 1 million dollars but only make $40,000. I wasn't having any of that.
