Sale Prices

I'm not trying to criticize anyone in particular, but I've noticed the listed price on the FS pages have been pretty high. I see items that are listed for about as much as they are from a reputable vendor such as buy.com, zipzoomfly, or even fry's. When you buy from another user you're taking more of a risk than from a vendor, and most of the time there's also no warranty on the item left. Not to mention the item's been used for some time already, so what's with the prices? Yes, I'm sure you can negotiate a lower price, but unless it's a pretty large discount I don't see why anyone would buy a used item so close to retail value.

You're not taking a lot of risk by buying from a reputable ATer.

But I agree, many expect way too much for their stuff.

I think it's a combination of people either over valuing their items and/or used to getting low balled or negoitated with.

Since electronics (computer equipment especially) tends to drop in price FAST some sellers think they are making it a good price becaused they paid twice as much for it only 2 months ago.

Also every time I have posted anything for sale (which is very rarely) every one wants to offer you a lower price. So it's kind of like when you go in to a car dealership, they have the car listed at a high price because they know almost nobody is going to actually just buy it without haggling a little bit. So if a seller REALLY wants $120 from an item, they are probably going to list it at $140 or $150 so when someone comes in and offers them 20 percent less, they get what they want and the buyer comes away thinking they got a good deal.

Just my take on it...

I always list items for a bit more then I want to sell them for, but I do take into account the price they are available for new as well.

The problem on FS/FT is folks seem to value items based on what they originally paid instead of current value which results in some absurd listings.

IMO is the sellers prices are close to the retail, Ill buy the retail( buts its a sale price to)

My general rule is if it's 50% of retail, I'll buy it off the forums.
Otherwise it's not worth the hassle of trying to return a broken/dead/warranty item to/through a private individual than it is a retail store.

I see it in the classifieds, too. Stuff like appliances that are several years old selling for only about 20% off the price of a new one. Stores have better sales than that on their new merchandise.

This is one reason I don't buy from the for sale threads. I'd rather buy from Newegg and get their warranty/support rather than deal with someone who might have overclocked the crap out of something and take the chance of receiving damaged goods.
Yes, I know many sellers are reputable, but I'd rather not take the chance, especially when so many are selling for near retail prices.

well put...I agree

I bought a 250GB drive off an ATer in the FS/T forum. It died within hours. I let it go, it was only $50 (for $10 more I could have got a new Seagate 300gb from Frys) and I learned a lesson to not buy stuff like that on the FS/T.

yeap.

i see to many in FS that have it %80-90 retail. WTF i am not going to pay %80+ shipping. fuck that i will go buy it retail.

For anything I look at the average ebay selling price. I am usually willing to pay a little bit extra for something with box/manuals etc.

But yeah, a lot of people are a bit nuts on their asking price and then in PM when you make an offer. Sellers need to know they don't have to take an offer, just reply you want more. Funny thing is is usually I end up getting it cheaper on ebay than they said was possible.

Some hot items push the limits, but 50% is about average on any hardware once it's used. It doesn't matter if it's 2 weeks old or not...it's used.

It's really bad on the people charging 90% of retail on items that ship free usually and then they tack on postage + handling.
