Salary negotiation question..

Yesterday, I interviewed at a high profile company for a front-end web developer position. Today, I received a call from HR who asked me about my salary requirements (to which I gave a vague answer, no numbers), and she did not make an offer. This is a good sign right?

The job description mentions "looking for ...Senior Web Developer...", while I just got out of college with a CS degree. However, if they determined in the interview that I'm capable of performing a the job, I should also negotiate for a senior-level salary, no?

The problem is, "front end developer" is a relatively new specialization, and I couldn't find a salary range to work with. The closest thing I could find in salary.com is "Web Software Developer" with a $79k median in Los Angeles, and "Web Software Developer, Sr.", $95k median :Q Holycrap. Those numbers seem way too high.

So.. what number should I shoot for here?

Cliffs: Front-end web developer in So Cal. How much should I get paid?

I think they probably think you're able to do the job, but I doubt they'll want to pay a senior-level salary to a recent grad with no post-college work experience. They may see you as a less expensive alternative to a senior level developer.

"Front-end developer" is not a new specialization, it's just a more specific title than Salary.com feels a need to track (rightly so). Web software developer would be an equivalent title.

That's one way I'm looking at it too.. that's why I don't know what number should I give if I'm pressed for one because the range is just way too big. I don't want short change myself or let them think I'm crazy either.

Thanks for the reply :)

You dont give them ANY number. Just tell them that you will entertain any competitive offer.

saying no number will bite you in the ass in my opinion. when it comes to web work its always who bids the lowest that knows the most. You say no number and they put you in the "maybe" pile which usually never ends up getting looked at cause some guy will comes along that has put the same exact buzz words on his resume and said 60K will get the job.

75-low 80's sound about right. Start higher see their reaction. It's always better to do this face to face. If they dont like your offer they will give you theirs.
