<< MadRat, there are many non-managerial jobs that do not qualify for overtime. If the job can be classified as "professional", then they generally do not get overtime pay. Engineers, architects, etc. would be in that category.
For example, where I work we have engineers and technicians. The technicians get overtime, and the engineers don't. Their jobs are classified differently, and they don't feel they are being "abused". Most of the technicians aspire to become engineers, and they know exactly how the overtime works. To them, it's worth it for the chance to make 2-3 times their current salary. >>

i make 3 times what most people do who work hourly in a year, my job is more stable, and i have the chance to move ahead.
