Salad, first or last?

So

Lifer
I know that the vast majority of Americans eat salad before dinner, but growing up in a semi-italian family, we always had salad AFTER the meal, before desert (if there was tobe any). I'm having a few friends over for dinner tonight and was considering doing it that way. How weird will they think I am if I do?

You won't have friends if you keep doing stupid shit like that.

Wow, surprisingly tame for a first response. I expected you to tell me that they would murder me violently with salad forks and feast upon my corpse if I did it that way.

I try to be unpredictable.

Salad isn't food. It's something to do while waiting for the food to arrive. Therefore, no point in having it after.

First. I like salad, but it's best for tantilizing the taste buds and stimulating the stomach for the main meal without filling you up. I'm assuming a Leafy salad and not Potato or Pasta.

In my family we always had salad first, and I always thought it should be first. Although my roommate in college always saved the salad for last. Why worry about crap like that though, you do what you prefer and they better like it.

Umm i eat the salad with the food, i never heard of people eating salad before or after dinner. Unless you're in a restaurant where you have the salad first while you wait for your food then ya.

Exactly.

I lived in Europe for a number of years and got used to salad last; I prefer it that way.

I don't find that salad sharpens my appitite in any way.; I'd rather have a drink and something lighter like mixed nuts or pretzels etc.

I'll take my salad last and if I'm still hungry after the main meal I fill up on salad (instead of something heavy & fattening).

But you can make the salads before hand (but no croutons, you don't want them getting soggy). I then cover them and put in the fridge; they'll stay fresh. Those who like 'em first can have them; others like me can wait.

If you're serving salad as a separate dish, then it should be be eaten before the main course. If you serve it with dinner as a side dish, then it's fine along with the entree.

This.

As a side note, I remember reading somewhere about how optimists usually eat the best tasting things first, and then the worst last. Pessimists wait to eat the best tasting things last. I guess it really depends on what you consider good tasting food, I myself love salads and usually eat them first.
