Sahara - worth watching

If you liked The Mummy & The Mummy Returns & The Rundown and movies that generally would catagorized into the "adventure" genre, you should probably give Sahara a look this Friday. Its also tame enough to take most of the family to; when I was there with my date, we saw quite a many families there.

As far as the movie itself, there are a few elements of the plot that seem a little far-fetched, but the on-screen action and comedic chemistry between McConaughey and Zahn more than make up for that. This is a solid 6.5 / 7.0 movie, but it will not go down as a classic flick a la Indiana Jones series, or to a lesser degree, The Mummy.

Its rather long for a film of its type, clocking in at around two hours or so (the movie started right at 6:05 p.m. and we were out of the theater by 8:30 p.m.), but you really don't mind or notice since the action is well-paced and moves along the plot quite well.

Its a definite :thumbsup: :thumbsup:.

Then again I could be biased since I didn't actually have to pay to see it.

 

The old Sahara is much better.

Perhaps, although I should say right now that this movie has no links or relations with Bogart's 1943 flick. It is based on Clive Cussler's novel of the same name, and therefore hardly a fair comparsion since the name is about the only thing they share in common.

I read the book that this is based on and I really liked it. It's a little too bad this movie probably doesn't stay absolutely true to the book as Penelope Cruz would be naked if it did.

I like Clive Cussler and I liked this movie also, worth the money IMO.

Just got back from the movie a little while ago. I liked it quite a bit, and hope Cussler will get to help make more of his books into movies. I can definitely see this turning into a new series...

Just got back from watching this. Been a bit since I read the book, but from what I can remeber pretty close to it. Enjoyed the book and the movie.

Yeah I thought it would suck.. I hate it when they run a trailer over and over on tv killing all the good parts. But it was one of the better adventure movies Ive seen in a while.

Saw Sahara this weekend and I must say I was pleasantly surprised. I've read the book twice so I figured I would pick it apart which to an extent I did then I took it for what it was and really enjoyed it. Plenty of action, albeit quite impossible, and the chemistry with McConaughey and Zahn was really on point. Even though they cast the roles as nothing like the book I think in their own way they pulled it off quite well.

I'll definitely get the DVD when it comes out.

I like clive cussler, so I do want to see this. One critic of Sahara (mrsskoorb's dad), said they made dirk pitt more of a clown and less james bondy than the books have him as.

It seems like every other movie I watch on HBO these days has Steve Zahn in it. The guy must really be making bank!

Skoorb, this is true. He's not portrayed in a Bond like fashion as he is in the books but I still don't think it detracts from the movie because he and Zahn really carry the movie well if you can get the strict adherance to the book out of your head. Unlike Around the World in 80 Days I really liked this adaptation.
