Saffron rice - food of the gods

I'll give the persian saffron rice a try, sounds awesome.

For tonight's side dish, fresh homemade pesto orzo along with cedar plank grilled/smoked ginger/soy marinated steelhead, mango salsa. So don't tell me I can't cook. I just really like the taste of that stuff in the packet for a quick side dish.

Real saffron is great. At grocery stores in Germany you can buy excellent Iranian saffron for super cheap. Iranian saffron rocks. 75 threads used to go for under $5.00.

It looks and handles like the saffron you buy here in the Spice Islands jars for $25.00 for 20 threads.

Important point you've made: don't buy saffron at a mainstream grocery store, it's a ripoff. Find a middle eastern or Indian grocery store. Plus the turnover at regular grocery stores is very low so it is likely the saffron is old.

Costco actually has a very nice supplier. It's well packed too. Runs around $16 for 25 threads.

Like saffron, "sushi" rice at a grocery store is a major rip off. About a 1lb is 1/4 the price of a 20lb+ bag at an Asian market.

What makes MSG bad?

Safety

MSG has been used for more than 100 years to season food. During this period, extensive studies were conducted to elucidate the role, benefits and safety of MSG. At this point, international and national bodies for the safety of food additives consider MSG safe for human consumption as a flavor enhancer.[17] Therefore, the intake of MSG as a food additive and the natural level of glutamic acid in foods do not represent a toxicological concern in humans.[17] A report from the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) compiled in 1995 on behalf of the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) concluded that MSG is safe when "eaten at customary levels" and although there seems to be a subgroup of apparently healthy individuals that respond with the MSG symptom complex when exposed to 3 g of MSG in the absence of food, causality by MSG has not been established because the list of MSG Symptom complex was based on testimonial reports.[19] This report also indicates that there is no data to support the role of glutamate in chronic and debilitating illnesses. A controlled double-blind multicenter clinical trial failed to demonstrate the relationship between MSG Symptom complex and the consumption of MSG in individuals that believed to react adversely against MSG. No statistical association has been demonstrated, there were few responses and they were inconsistent. Symptoms were not observed when MSG was given with food.[20][21][22][23]

Additional studies that have looked into whether MSG causes obesity have given mixed results.[25][26] There have been several studies investigating an anecdotal link between MSG and asthma; current evidence does not support any causal association.[27]
Since glutamates are important neurotransmitters in the human brain, playing a key element in learning and memory, there is ongoing study by neurologists about possible side-effects of MSG in food but no conclusive studies drawing any connections.[28]
What is MSG? Is it bad for you?
What exactly is MSG?

sodium

to clarify...most of the MSG stygma is just dogma. Rumors of it shutting down metabolism, causing insanity, etc are all popular tales.

In the end it's just another salt product.

It is a diuretic however. That's why a lot of people have to run to the bathroom after eating at buffets.

I seriously doubt most at a buffet would be affected by the extra sodium enough.

I have been cutting down alot, this is me at a Walt Disney Buffet (Tusker House on our first day and the beginning of my cheat week, I didn't gain anything 🙂)

Edit: I didn't expect them both to whip out cameras after agreeing to watch their bags while they went to the buffet. Sadly I couldn't finish everything, just a few bites left. I ate all my Mac and Cheese something my wife hates 🙁 (she's a communist I tell her, but she says that is N. Korea) I am happy I gained no weight this trip and got a well needed break on my shoulder from surgery just a few months ago.

You look surprised that you were getting your pic taken.

LOL at your ninja edit.

It wasn't a ninja edit in so much that I am posting pictures to family and friends now and forgot this detail.

My wife hates this pic as she says my tummy looks bigger than it is and my face skinnier than it is.

local supermarket has the OP's saffron rice.
5oz bag.
boil 1 2/3cups water + butter/margine. then add rice.
done in 20min.

any microwave versions?

lol, is that supposed to be a benchmark dish?

No, it's just a staple and all made from scratch with fresh home grown herbs (pesto is homemade that evening). Fish came out a perfect medium with a nice smoke crust. Those flavor combinations are out of this world good, every complex with a ton of depth.

This is what happens to me.. the problem with msg supporters is they have now written off anyone who doesn't want msg as it's just bad/false reports.

For me MSG works faster than milk of magnesia. And yes some natural dishes do the same thing, we are all built different. But on the other hand I can go into any Thai place and eat their hottest dish without any problem.

It does sound good for sure.
