OK. I ended with the Merkur Long Handle. The reviews said it was not slippery

A shaving starter kit that didn't look ghetto but wasn't too much

Feather blades

Kept it under my $80 budget. Hopefully this will last a very long time.

Awesome shaving soap:

Nice glide for the razor, lathers up nicely, and my wife loves the smell.

is this you? (user image)

I love my DE razor. I have a plain Gillette that is from 50's. I also have a Gem JR from 1912 I LOVE IT (single blade) but can't find anymore blades.

i been searching for a DE razor with a thick big handle (wich is why i love the Gem JR). so far no luck.

WHOA! they have one! hmm the handle is only 3 inches. be nice if it was 4-5. not a bad price.

I see a lot of people recommending the feather blades. they are good. BUT if you are new to DE get sampler pack and try a bunch of different blades (they are different). I like the red label persona's

Couple years ago I went with a chrome Merkur, nothing too fancy. I go with the German blades, they seem to be a little sharper out of the box and last longer than others. Got a box of 50 I think it was, and still have most of it left. The savings you get when ditching the 'latest and greatest' disposable stuff and go to a DE Safety is astounding. Those cheap alloys go dull almost immediately, while a double edge Merkur razor lasts me almost 2 months!

I keep a glass of mineral oil in my cabinet to store the razor head down in it when not in use. Keeping a layer of lub on the steel helps extend the life of the edge and compliments what you put on your face when trying to keep the irritation down.

Safety razors are the way to go, with the caveat that they are not the best tool when you are in a REAL hurry and there's no way you can head out without shaving.

For that reason I always keep a couple cheap disposables handy. I can give myself a reasonably close shave quickly in the shower and not have blood show up around my mouth and jaw line.

Just go with a basic model, no need to spend more money than necessary. Put the savings towards a stockpile of good replacement razors.

I've been wanting to give the Imperial kit a try, so far I've heard food things about it.

you should buy it for me for my birthday

haha if I get you in this year's secret santa I will, wait no I wont :sneaky:

$30 doesn't seem that bad to me for pre shave oil, soap and aftershave, I'm just a little worried about shipping, Huckberry has it with 5 dollar shipping but a 10% credit back.

ohhh...that's right.

I was disqualified from the birthday threads because I kept changing my birthday in my profile so I would get extra happy birthdays from him.

damnit I just spat out a mouthful of bugles on my laptop from laughing.

 what a great idea!

I'm really good at coming up with ways to break rules that no one has every thought to make.

At my last job, we had "The rudeguy (except my last name) rules". These were a set of rules just for me. Stuff that no one else would ever think to do, but I had done, so they had to make a special set of rules so I wouldn't do it any more.

The best one was a direct order from my boss' boss:
"You are not allowed to send out 'Happy Caturday' emails with pictures of cats to the entire email distribution list".

Well WTF is the list there for if I can't use it?

A little update:

I've been using the razor for a little over a week and I love it. I am mad at myself for not making the switch sooner.

The razor takes way less effort than a triple blade. No more pushing down to get all the hair. I have a pretty stiff beard, so this is huge. Because its gentler, I have way less burns and cuts. The shave soap and brush is awesome. I never would have guessed how much of a difference that made. I really look forward to shaving in the morning now.

I'm eager to get my head shaved so I can start doing that with the safety razor as well.

I did have to invest about $70 for the whole kit but I'm sure those supplies will last me for a very long time. I have 2 things of shave soap and 10 razors. I'm sure I'll have to buy more razors in a couple months but I planned it that way so I can try other brands.

I highly recommend you guys try this. Its a whole new world of shaving bliss.

at rudeguy's behest:

my little brother got me this Mühle set for my birthday:

S%2081%20H%20331%20SSR1_600.jpg

the quality seems good: a wee bit on the light side, the unvarnished plum wood handle doesn't seem to get slippery when wet, the brush is handmade and the pure badger hairs feels like they're supposed to, the stand is sturdy and functional. It has a closed comb.

now comes the fun part of figuring out which blades goes best with this razor's aggressiveness.

Here is my advice:

Pay attention to the angle, not the pressure. Multi blade razors need a lot more pressure but the angle isn't important. It took me a bit to find the correct angles for my face. My head is even trickier. But with the right angle the shave is so smooth.

For some reason a "safety razor" makes me think the person using it wears a helmet 24/7.

Is that just a term or what is the deal? I am always open to getting away from this Fusion on principal alone.

Yeah, that is just the name of that design. They were introduced after straight razors, as a less deadly form of whisker trimming

OP, just go full hipster and get a straight razor. you know you want to.

I really do want to. Some silly Dane got me interested in one and now I'm wondering how much better it would be.
