"safer" spot in a tornado?

IF IN MOBILE HOMES OR VEHICLES...EVACUATE THEM AND GET INSIDE A
SUBSTANTIAL SHELTER. IF NO SHELTER IS AVAILABLE...LIE FLAT IN THE
NEAREST DITCH OR OTHER LOW SPOT AND COVER YOUR HEAD WITH YOUR HANDS.

I'm amazed that seeking shelter in a ditch is better than remaining in a trailer.

Trailers have a lot of surface area. A ditch will protect you from debris and unless the tornado goes directly over you you won't go flying away.

lol, maybe inside a culvert that is in a ditch, but not in the ditch itself with body exposed to falling debris such as cars and cows. Even the culvert I'd be scared as if the tornado happens to be a hurricane you could drown from all the incoming water. Under a bridge would maybe be safe, though if the bridge collapses you're screwed. 100 tons of concrete and rebar slamming down, no chance. Guess it all falls down to "safer" place, as there is no "safe" place when it comes to these type of storms.

Personally I'd feel safer in a trailer provided it's been anchored down VERY well.

If you are under ground level you are safer generally.

It's like a basement or crawl space can protect you.

Have you not seen all the trailer parks that get destroyed by tornadoes. They are very unsafe in hurricanes and tornadoes.

But, in the ditch, you'd have to worry about trailers that were blown around by the tornado landing on you! :p

Well, yeah, I've seen the aftermath of trailer parks being hit by tornados - it's the local news reporter's wet dream. 1000 houses can be damaged, but if the same tornado goes through a trailer park, that's where they're going to show their first videos of the destruction.

Now, if you're in the middle of the trailer park & there's a tornado bearing down on you, do you go running from your trailer, try to do a 100 yard dash with debris flying around in the area, hurrying to the nearest ditch, or do you hunker down in your bathtub inside your trailer? Trailer park in a tornado prone area: not the smartest of places to live. Trailer park - hurricane - plenty of warning.

I mean there are two good reasons for being in a ditch:
1) much like being in a foxhole, you're much less likely to get hit by flying debris.
2) if the tornado passes near/over you, the aerodynamic forces you feel will be GREATLY reduced if you're in a ditch. In a nutshell, the air inside the ditch will be relatively stationary; when the fast swirling tornado passes overhead, the air in the ditch will appear as solid ground. I mean yes the tornado will cause that air to move, but not as much as it will cause the air above ground level to move. The thing w/vortices is that their lateral effect is much stronger than their vertical effect.

Ever hear of a Ditch Park getting hit by a tornado? No, because tornadoes go straight for the Trailer Park.

hmm, i think we had this argument several weeks/months ago...

or maybe that was about being in your car or being in a ditch...

I still say the car is safer. Trailer, im no convinced... they are more likely to roll over resulting in injury on a direct tornado hit.

previous discussion.

Wind and debris flying around will either lift and/or destroy a trailer while in a ditch you're protected by the wind and flying debris. Just need to worry about anything falling on you, same as if you were in a trailer.

I've seen some trailer parks where they'll have small underground shelters dug out for every 4-or-so spots, so 8-10 people should be able to cram in.

outside of a missile silo, a ditch is probably one of the best places to be, including normal, well built houses w/o basements

you're safer climbing to the top of a cell phone tower then staying in a trailer.

Ditch is waaaaaaaaay safer than a trailer. Trailer Parks account for a huge percentage of tornado deaths (I have no numbers to back that up).

No, absolutely not. No no no.

If a tornado passes directly over you, you are fucked unless you have substantial cover. Most of the "safe places" are to protect you from flying debris.

Im sure lots of people confuse the two.

Ok so you anchor it down to the point that it doesnt go airborne but most trailers are made out of cardboard and paper mache so once you get 80-90mph winds it will collapse and disintegrate.

Most debris will be flying in a horizontal direction meaning if you are in a ditch its likely that nothing is going to hit you (well, when compaired to being in a well anchored trailer that is). Either way, most people dont have access to a truely "safe" area when it comes to tornados, best you can do is get to a "safer" location.
