"Safely remove hardware" ???

I'm installing Win XP...no problems...

I run into some difficulty installing my lan network adaptor (I call it the cable modem). I get an error during the modem install that says the modem isn't configured properly. I check the documentation and it says to go to Device Manager, and uninstall the device, shut down, unplug the power to the modem, wait 30 seconds, then replug and start up again.

I do it. The solution works. The modem works. But now whenever I start XP, in the lower right on the task bar, I have a small icon that looks like a small slot beneath a green arrow pointing to the left. When I place the cursor over it, the description reads "Safely remove hardware."

I click on it, and the standard properties window for the device from the device manager appears. It reports that the device is working fine. I close the window, the icon remains.

How do I make this irritating icon go away?

are u set to Memory Usage ->system cache? try setting it to Programs

It's under windows key-Break (system) and Advanced -> Performance -> Advanced.

good luck I had tons of problems with system cache and my Radeon 8500 O/C program.

to remove the icon (same in win2k) open up the dialogue box (by double clicking the "safely remove hardware" icon) and there should be a checkbox for "show option for this device" or something like that. You may have to click on your lan connetion/modem in that box and select properties, then look for the "show dialogue for this device" and uncheck it. I used to play with it all the time, but now i'm on mandrake and wanna get this thing going.
