safely remove hardware

you know that icon that should be in the taskbar when you plug in something plug and play right? the "safely eject hardware" button?

i don't see it, even though i have two removable storage media's connected, and i used to be able to see them!

how can i show it again?

Don't mean to thread whore, but I'm just curious if you could also fill me in on just what it does? I have a usb microdrive and I always use that "Eject Hardware" function, but sometimes when I give it to other folks, they just pull it right out. It hasn't hurt anything yet (that I can tell), but should I be more insistent about it? Thanks

apparently with some devices you have to be careful. my usb drives are an ipod and a 160GB external enclosre. if i just pull the plug while i'm say, uploading something onto that drive, the data gets corrupted. with the ipod if i'm sync'ing and unplug it, it'll screw up my mp3's and make the space "Disappear" on the ipod....

I've never had a problem just unplugging stuff if I know that there are no files being exchanged.

yup. i know when the transfer is done and i just snap it out. no problems here. i dont think i have EVER used that button.
