Safe Voltage for Core 2 Processors

Thought the OP might be interested in this thread over at XS. Realize, of course, that the XS guys are pretty extreme and are gutsier than most of us, however, they do have a lot of experience throwing a lot of volts at chips so I think their advice has some merit. If I were richer I might just try 1.65V (that and a board that would provide that much juice).

Wow, I must have a damn good chip then. And yes, it's dual prime stable for ~30 min (long enough for me, it didnt fail, I just stopped the test)

30 minutes is not enough. My E6400 can run 6 Orthos for 6 hours @1.425V and yet it is freezing during games anytime between 1 to 3 hours.

You must run Orthos during 12 hours if you want to be 100% sure it is not going to "surprise" you.

 
Alright, well I never believed it would happen, but I just sold my 3 week old OEM E6600 on Amazon for $345. Yes, you heard right, used, $345. In addittion, I have just placed an order with Newegg for a NEW RETAIL E6600 for $339 with FREE SHIPPING. The reason for this trade is the news about the week 27's hitting 3.6 ghz with only 1.45v (thank you for the link Geekwannab: http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=113926.

My processor was only able to get 3.15ghz with 1.45v and I'm hoping to duplicate Brahmzy with the E6600 at 3.6ghz with 1.445vcore (yes i have the same setup as him otherwise). I'll post a little update for all those interested on the differences between my experience with a week 23 e6600 and a week 27/28 e6600. I'll be here by the end of the week.

Too bad those guys on xtremesystems do max overclocking outside a case with a rather large array of fans blowing all around the mobo. I've seen pictures. You probably won't duplicate these things inside a case.

ya, I belive orthos is a piece of crap. I can run it for any given time and STILL get an error, whereas Prime95, SuperPi, and hours of gaming are just fine
 
i was just thinking about what more important: voltage or temp? does it matter how much voltage you give the cpu as long as you keep it relatively cool? cuz i'm having the opposite situation. i go up to 1.3750 vcore and my cpu is near 60 degrees under full load. so won't that have the same effect as using a lot of vcore and kill my cpu quickly?

I used to run Prime95, but setting 2 sessions, affinity, etc takes time and when you are hunting for a setup, it is a pain in the back.

Orthos is pratical and works fine for me. Results are consistent with Prime95. Do you guys run the same kind of test (smallxlargexblend)?

 
why would you want to go any faster with these processors? they are like cutting edge even at stock speeds.. overclocked they are faster than anything else on the market.. why fret over a few GHz of speed if it requires a 0.5v increase in voltage? I'd say find the best tradeoff with voltages under 1.4v and just live with that speed.. ANY useful work that you don wouldn't be affected..

And personally i couldn't be less bothered with Orthos, or Primes or Pi's or other such crap to prove stability... that's not what I do with my computer.. I work, play, post process images, listen to songs, watch movies etc etc with my computer and it's stable for those loads.
