Some stranger from other side of country wants to sell me a gift card for 1/2 price. Whats the safest way to buy this without getting ripped off. Thanks

hmmm that's a tough one. how about offer to pay 1/2 first, and then the rest when it checks out?

Use a transaction method you might be able to recover - ala paypal. Have him show you verification of the funds still on the gift card - not to say he won't accept your money and then immediately spend the gift card.

Really only way to trust someone is if they have feedback from other selling and buying (is heatware even a thing anymore??)

yeah exactly, if the seller is intent on scamming, it's too easy. he can show the receipt and then spend it right after. i'm assuming this isn't on ebay and the guy wants cash, otherwise feedback/reputation is worth something and paypal will favor the buyer.

i would call the guy up and sound him out.
