Is there any way to accept paypal for a CL transaction and ensure I don't get scammed?

paypal is alot safer than cash.

There's just so much spam on craigslist that people are used to paypal meaning that you're going to send them a phishing message or a spoofed paypal email.

I wouldn't trust people who don't have paypal to be honest. All paypal transactions I've done on craigslist have been 100% legit.

Why would you do Paypal for a local transaction?

To avoid bringing a bunch of cash to a stranger off the internet.. .that's a good starting point. or if you're like me, you don't want to waste 2 hours driving in traffic to pick up an item when you could pay w\ paypal and have them ship it.

If it's not local, it's a no-go.

Believe it or not there are some legit people that use craigslist. If you don't know how to use paypal and you don't know what a fake paypal email looks like, just use google and find examples.

paypal doesn't hold payments until items are recieved, obviously.

The reason you don't use PP with CL is because the relationship ends after you and the buyer/seller part ways. Cash is permanent. If the jackoff buyer decides in two days he doesn't want your item because he found a different one for less or a newer one or whatever stupid reason people come up with he can't freeze your PP account with a BS complaint.

Buying with cash :

  • Small items, great. But when you get into the hundreds of dollars, you have to consider the possibility of robbery. people post stuff on craigslist and then rob them... it happens.

  • Your average thug has probably never heard of paypal.

Selling :

  • You don't have to have some shmo show up at your house with $20 less than your already super low asking price.

  • Plenty of counterfeit bills out there.

  • If it's marked as "Gift" there is no option to freeze accounts w\ claims.

The problem with Paypal is I doubt a lot of Craigslisters would be comfortable paying or accepting payment with Paypal. I know I wouldn't do it. The moment someone suggests that the transaction should be anything other than local + cash, my scam detector goes crazy.

I tend to stick to small things, though. Never bought or sold anything for more than about $200.

he says he's in IN which is about 60 miles from me. He offered paypal since I didn't want to drive down to meet him.

Would I be CMA if I offer to drive to meet him and he says yes, then offer to take paypal and ship?

Meet halfway and exchange item/cash, asking for trouble with paypal and CL.

Paypal is scam central. Sure, legitimate folks might use paypal, but there's no way to protect yourself when the buyer uses paypal. If they want to scam you, they will. For example, what are you going to do when you get home and find out that the buyer filed a complaint that the item was not what you said it was? Your paypal account will get frozen and you'll probably be out the money and the item.

You can use the 'gift' loophole, but that's against the terms of service and paypal can nail you for that as well.

Cash only. Period.

there are plenty of legit people that use CL, no one is denying this. that is why there is one universal rule that is always obeyed:

LOCAL ONLY.

98% of those that want you to ship something from CL are fucking scammers.

If you don't want to do local, then go to eBay.
