Safe to take CC payment with paypal?

Gonna sell something for $250 and the guy wants to use CC payment with paypal. He only has like 25 refs. Kinda nervous about accepting that much with CC payment.

Any risks? Will paypal cover it if its stolen or something or is that possible?

I wouldn't just because of the charge you'll get per transaction due to having to upgrade your account to take CC payments.

My account is upgraded. I've took CC payments before but just small amounts and didn't care as much. But never took one this big and am concerned a bit.

Yes if you do it the right way.
  • Read and follow Paypal's seller protection policy
  • Only ship to a PAYPAL CONFIRMED SHIPPING ADDRESS using an authorized shipper (not USPS) make sure to REQUIRE SIGNED AUTHORIZATION that the package was received. I know that Dell Home offers this.

Exactly what I'm afraid of. He said he is verified and has 250+ ebay refs. I'll looking to that Rossman

after reading that I still don't know. He has alot of ebay refs and a few heatware but still ain't sure. What has got me thinking is he said he just uses his CC with paypal and they don't have anything to do with his bank. Guess I could see how many verfied paypal transactions he's had.

Slightly OT, what are the fees charged on CC payments through Paypal, exactly?

To accept CC payments via Paypal, your account has to be a Premier account. When an account is a Premier account, ALL transactions are charged a fee, CC or non-CC.

The fee structure for a Premier account is:

Standard Rate:

2.9% + $0.30 per transaction, no matter the source of payment.

(Monthly Received Payment (USD)......$0.00 USD-$3,000.00 USD)

Fees for receiving eCheck payments will not exceed $5.00 USD per transaction.

A Merchant account is structured the same way, except as the volume of payments increases, the percentage charged decreases. I doubt anyone here would qualify/need to set up a Merchant account since the dollar amounts and qualifications are a bit tougher to get...............but they are:

Merchant Rate (qualification required):

$3,000.01 USD-$10,000.00 USD...............2.5% + $0.30 USD

$10,000.01 USD-$100,000.00 USD..............2.2% + $0.30 USD

> $100,000.00 USD.........................1.9% + $0.30 USD (These rates are based as noted below.)

Eligibility for Merchant Rates are determined based upon sales volume from the previous calendar month. To qualify for Merchant Rates, a seller must complete a one-time application and meet the Merchant Rate Criteria.

Then, if you accept a foreign currency payment, Paypal will convert the currency to USD, but again, charges a fee:

* If your transaction involves a currency conversion, it will be completed at a retail foreign exchange rate determined by PayPal, which is adjusted regularly based on market conditions. This exchange rate includes a 2.5% spread above the wholesale exchange rate at which PayPal obtains foreign currency, and the spread is retained by PayPal. The specific exchange rate that applies to your multiple currency transaction will be displayed at the time of the transaction.

Sorry if I hijack your thread, but it is relevant enough that I don't want a new thread.

My wife recently opened up a small dance studio. We are interested in eventually taking CC payments since (1) a couple of her customers are well known to write a lot of bad checks and (2) as a convenience for the customers. Unfortunately CC machines are a huge expense (~$700 for most machines although some are cheaper). Plus using them is far more expensive than Paypal (% is higher and fees are higher). I've been thinking of doing Paypal instead. But I've never used Paypal.

What are your opinions of Paypal? What would you think of a service company that you go to in person but that accepts CC payments online only? Safety is also an issue, but with a service company we really aren't out anything and can just deny future service.

Do not take CC payments with paypal, because that person can tell their CC bank whatever story they want to get a reversal charge and your stuck paying the bills. Paypal won't do anything for you.
It happened to me before.
Sold something on Ebay that worked just fine and I never stated it was new, well the guy got it and it didn't work for him(it would have worked but he had other things done that caused this product not to work for him, his fault not mine he could have asked questions before hand that would have answered this before he bought it).
First he complained to Paypal and said he never got it. Well I had a tracking # so that proved that he did.I talked to Paypal and explained the situation and Paypal sided with me that I was in the right.

Well he bitched and yelled at me in Emails so I basically stopped replying to him. Well months down the road he made a complaint to his CC bank saying the item he recieved was either damaged/or wrong item.
Paypal contacted me about this and the only thing they did was check my tracking # to make sure I sent it to him.
It showed that he got it and then Paypal made a reversal on my account?!?!?!

Paypal would neither tell me why and would not tell me his Bank name so I could explain it to them.
So I got screwed and had to pay this guy his money back no questioned asked.

This guy was a lier and a cheat. He first filed w/ Paypal saying he never recieved the package until I proved that he did w/ a tracking #. Then He filed with his CC bank saying it was the wrong item and they basically forced Paypal to take money directly out of my account and I could not do anything about this.

NEVER TAKE CC PAYMENTS PERIOD!!!!
PAYPAL WILL NOT HELP YOU IN ANYWAY!!!

No, his cc company did not force Paypal to take the $$$ out of your account. Paypal does this because they get charged for the chargeback...their looking for anyway possible to get those funds.

Sniper- if you are unsure then don't do it. Personally, I only trust ebay feedback if I am buying something off ebay...I only trust heatware if I am buying something from here....if the person has limited heat I would not accept the CC payment.

Umm....Paypal sided with me the first time and said I was right, after that the CC company made a chargeback and made Paypal take money from me. How is this not forcing Paypal to take my money.
Paypal said it was because of his CC company and then they wouldn't even tell me who it was.

I guess the only way for me to have found out was to take this guy to court. That is a bunch of BS.

I only use CC paypal when buying something - I'd rather have the insurance of them pulling the money from my credit card than taking it directly from my checking account. I don't see what the deal is with balking at accepting CC paypals because of the fees, either. Fees are a part of doing business and offering the flexibility to accept paypal from a credit card. I don't see how you can be screwed if you're careful and courteous with the person.

Simple, think about it for a second.

Paypal sided with you when they weren't exactly being affected. When your buyer complained about "never receiving the package" Paypal wasn't going to see a loss of funds regardless of who they sided with. If they sided with him they would have just transferred funds from your account to his, since they sided with you the funds stayed in your account.

Fastforward to the chargeback, which Paypal HATES...the credit card company who performs the chargeback CHARGES Paypal. Hence, Paypal sees the loss of funds on its books, and of course it doesn't want that so it will go after whoever it can to recoup the funds.

I wouldn't be surprised if Paypal first went after the guy who issued the chargeback, and then after realizing they wouldn't be able to recoup funds from him they went after you.

Paypal didn't have to go after you for the chargeback, you did everything necessary and you fell into their Protection Policy.

When it comes to Paypal being charged all the "Seller Protection Policies and Buyer Protection Policies" get thrown out the window.

This is the same with Paypal and without Paypal. The person accepting a CC payment assumes the responsibility for the payment. Anyone at anytime can dispute a charge on their CC bill (federal law states that). The customer gets the money back, and the business is left out in the cold. There are insurance programs that some businesses sign up for that will cover the loss, others eat it along with their other thefts.

This is the major benefit for a customer to use a CC. There are many, many consumer laws giving a CC user so many rights. The drawback is that a business loses in many disputes. That is why everyone recommends you use a CC not a debit card (where you have no federal laws giving you rights).

Paypal is just the go between. You'd have the the same problems if you took the CC directly.
