DLP at 2500 and under is the way to go.

Unless you see rainbows. We bought the 46" sammy dlp and it had a great picture, but I couldn't watch it. The rainbows were way too irritating and it gave me a headache.
I then bought a 42" Panasonic ED plasma. It also had a great picture. Much richer colors and crisper than the DLP, but I ended up returning it because it just wasn't big enough. Not that 42" is small, but if I'm going to spend over 2k on a tv, it needs to be big enough that it will keep me happy for several years. With the 42", I just kept wishing it was at least 46" or 50".

I really like the Sony LCD RP's. I looked at one side by side with the samsung DLP and they were pretty equivalent as far as picture goes. Unfortunately, the 50" sony with the speakers on the sides is too big for where we want to put it, and the 42" sony is too small. So I'm going to wait awhile until something else comes along.

I see no rainbows and no screen door effect on my 4805 and im only sitting like 11-12' away from a 100+" screen.

Sears gave me an "early Saturday" additional 10% off the sales price. We have had it for a year and love it.

BTW, Originally I was going with a good 5.1 sound system but haven't heard the need to do so.

Have you listened to a good sound system to compare?

Another good point... I am used to the crappy Speakers in a Symphonic 27" $150 BRAND NEW cost, TV

So maybe I should put $500 into a decent HT setup

Good sound to back up a big picture is very important in my opinion (as you can probably tell).

Some good entry level units include the Onkyo 777, and Rocket tykes.

What would you recommend as minimum points for a surround sound... 2 rear 2 front and center front?

Yeah, 5.1 is where it's at for movies.

You can go higher if you want to, but 5.1 is what you'd want to have at least.

Another option would be to build up to a 5.1 system over time (like getting a receiver and a set of stereo speakers... then adding a sub, center channel, and surrounds as budget allows)

I think Im more likely to get an all in one package deal for 400, and then if I have more money later, replacing the pieces

Couple things. I haven't heard them, but a lot of guys at the AVS forums think Onkyo makes a nice receiver but crappy muddy sounding speakers. They seem to like the Rockets, and the Athena Micras for reasonably priced 5.1 sets.

No matter what you go with, you will be amazed at what you were missing without 5.1 surround for DVD's. But, if you buy cheap speakers, you will probably want to replace them fairly soon. My first surround sound system was a Philips HTIB that I bought for like $200 a couple years ago. The DVD player crapped out a couple months ago, so it's basically useless now. But that's ok, because after the initial WOW factor, I started realizing how crappy the speakers are, so I was planning on replacing the sound sytem anyway. DVD players are much more likely to die than receivers, so you might want to get separate components.

Never seen a rainbow on my Sammy 50".

I can see rainbows if I try (fast eye movements on a white text on black background situation) but can't see it the vast majority of the time (like whenever I'm not looking for it).

I've read about the onkyo set not having the best speakers too... but at its price range (under $400), it's pretty hard to beat I think.

I had the same experience with my first HT set. Mainly I didn't really like my center channel so I ended up upgrading (just recently actually).

I'm going to watch X-Men tonight if things go as planned :)

It is a Sony 55 in. Grand WEGA LCD Projection TV/HDTV

Eventually I do want speakers but I can't make up my mind on great sterio or a good 5.1

I forgot the sub either the DD-12 or 15. The sterio setup would have one of these as well. I know it's not true sterio but... I also liked this receiver. I have listened to everything but the Ascends.

Yes it is, but make sure you don't suffer from rainbows before you buy it. I did, and got a Panasonic AE700 instead.

I picked up the 780 set for $440, setting it up at home and so far no complaints...

My main question now, is can I even put my TV in the basement, it is a mostly dry basement, but if it rains and gets a little damp in the air, do I have to worry about it corroding or doing anything nasty to the DLP TV? I have a de-humidifier running just in case, but I still wonder...

As long as water doesn't actually get in or on the TV, you will be fine.
