What is a CRT rear projection tv, its an "older" technology right?

Yes it is older but with the newer sets your going to have to change a bulb every so many hours with it when A crt set should last you a longer period of time without much to have fixed.

I would also think the picture would be better no? A crt computer screen has a better screen then a lcd or a DLP projector will have wouldnt it?

As far as burn in if you dont plan to keep your game paused for several hours at a time this wont be an issue. As far as side to side I have a very old CRT now and its not all that bad and Im sure with the newer crts its not as bad as what I have now though.

a rear projection CRT isnt simply a LARGE monitor though is it? Its a monitor with a projection onto a screen?

But so is a dlp or lcd monitor. Unless you get a projector you can have a very large screen but will not be quite as bright and if you do anything but a crt you will be changing bulbs that cost anywhere from $200-$600 each within 2000+ hours. Maybe even sooner if the bulb burns out even faster. 2000 hours at 12 hours a day average is less then half a year so you could be spending another $400-$1200 per year just on a bulb. I looked into this myself and for my situation Im not made of money and CRTs will last much longer and are much brighter then a projection like a infocus.

If your not going to watch much tv on it go for the others but I want to use what I buy and not have to worry about blowing a bulb or have to limit my tv enjoyment so I will stick with the one I linked you if I can afford to get one some day.

Really, check out avsforum.com if you are the type of person to research every possability before buying a fairly high ticket item. Those folks will give you the ends and outs of almost every model out there in their forums.

This is what I have, got it at costco with screen for under $1000
Have it hooked up to HDTV feed through comcast, looks great! Actually I find myself watching shows on discoveyHD that I never would watch normally😀

how large of a high quality image can this produce in low lighting

http://www.projectorcentral.com/InFocus...lay_4805-projection-calculator-pro.htm

You should be able to get a 110" image or so.

If you get a high gain screen, you can get it to larger.

With a higher budget though, you could get an HD projector. If you're just watching DVDs and regular tv though, and ED projector would be a great option.

Basement = get a projector!!!

That's the deal I got too

Too bad the free screen wasn't bigger. I might have to make a bigger one on my own out of blackout cloth or something.

I got mine at Costco also, ended up selling the screen for $100. Im projecting mine on a wall. It looks as good as the Screen did though. I forgot where I read it but I did the silver underlying paint, then the white on top of it. Its a really nice finish, and makes a large viewing area. The Sheetrock is really smooth too, so that helps.

DLP can't be beat at that price. Forget plasma, the cheap plasmas suck. Cheap LCD's....suck, too.

DLP at 2500 and under is the way to go.

I was projecting on my off-white dormroom wall for a while. It looked pretty good until we put up a sheet of white paper in the middle on the screen for comparison 😛

I watched "The Thing" with the screen afterwards and Antarctica looked great 😉

I'm going to be moving a lot over the next couple years (one of the reasons I got rid of my 36" sony wega) so painting walls isn't really an option for me. (not to mention where I am right now doesn't have any suitable walls (you can see in my sig how the walls are.... not exactly flat lol.

hrm, projector vs dLP rear projection, one is cheaper, other is.... not sure 😛

both have bulbs that will burn out

Alright... it's Jello time... 😛

You have / are getting a nice sound system to go with your nice new tv, right?

I'm the model of craziness having spent 3 times more on audio than video which is pretty much the opposite of what most people do, but for my purposes (watching DVDs), the 4805 is everything I want it to be.

hmmm they have a 50" HDTV plasma (soon to be)on sale for 2500 (after coupons/rebates) at Costco that the AVSforums are buzzing about. You might want to look that up. DLPs and LCDs are also nice at the price range.

I was a bit worried about the bulb issue until I saw a DLP projector in person, and then I didn't care anymore 🙂

Unless you're watching a ton every day, a bulb should last you a couple years. A new bulb every couple years is well worth it for me.

I suspect by the time I go through a couple bulbs I'll get upgraditis anyway 😛

4805 is $333

If it lasts about 3000 hours like the MTBF estimate, that's only 11 cents per hour of use. It it costs a quarter to watch a movie on my projector, I think it's a great deal!

anyways, what the people in AVSforums recommend most is for you to go out and compare the TVs in the showrooms. Bring your own DVD like Finding Nemo or Monster's Inc. to compare the colors (even though most are not calibrated) and see which one is more pleasing to you.

The thing that stoped me from looking is that is an est on the bulb life. Its only warented for like 90 days only and there is a chance it could die out even sooner. Again I paid that much to start out with fo rthe projector/TV I dont want to have to worry if i have enough bulb time left or have to keep shelling out money to make it work after paying for the set to begin with. Of course the manufacturs saw this and why they are ditching the CRT sets. Make more money off you on the sale of the bulbs. BUT DONT GET ME WRONG! If I had money to burn you can bet your A$$ I would buy the bigest badest mama jamama out there but I look at the long run so for me its CRT 😀
