What do you think:

Is it safe to be abroad right now? Especially with the Thursday deadline to hand over Bin Laden?

Yes or no? Why?

If we start to retaliate, either by land or air (supposedly we already have special ops in Afganistan) I am thinking it is not a good time to be abroad...

Depends on where you plan to go. The safest place to be is in the USA.

I guess the safest place in teh world to be right now is aboard Isreali Airline El-AL or however it's spelled.

ANyone else see that special about what security precautions they take. Man, it was unreal. Don't look like anything's going to happen on those planes besides taking off and landing.

Well, it was a News Report.

Basically, the airport is surrounded with ARMED Guards.

ALL carry on Items are compltely inspected. IE, everything taken out while you wait. All items inspected. Not by lowly security guards, but highly trained professionals.

People usually wait 3-5 hours to board. Physical searches are common. All checked bags go through some sort of fancy scanner. Questionable items are immediately searched.

The security guards are trained to spot irregularities, and question EACH traveler. "Where you going? Why? How long are you staying? Where are you from?"

Peopel that buy one-way tickets and are young trigger an immediate alarm, and are "harrassed" (not the word used on the newscast) to verify that they are legit passengers.

EL-AL will NOT hesitate to CANCEL a flight for ANY Suspicion they cannot find an answer to. Most flights are delayed.

Cockpit is impenentrable on the plane. Once the pilots are in there, the compartment is sealed by a vault like door. The cockpit is guarded on the plane by armed guards. In addition, there are two In-Cognito ARMED, and HIGHLY trained guards posing as passengers on every flight.

This costs El-AL with a fleet of 30+ planes several millions of dollars a year. To do this in the US was estimated to run in the billions. But everybody acknowledges that they are by far the most secure airline/airport on the planet.

Now, this was from memory on a late night newscast, and if anyone sees any errors, please correct. I tried hard to be exact!

Well I have been just fine living in London for the past 7 years.
To be honest, and I dont mean to offend anyone, but I cant see how the US can be regarded as the safest place atm... :(

Why would be unsafe to be abroad? Why would USA be the safest place? I mean, you were victims of terrorism only a week ago, killing over 5000! And it was not the first case, nor the last.

On the other hand, there has NEVER been terrorism in Finland (for example)! And we aren't a likely target for terrorist attack, there's nothing to gain here, we aren't influental enough to annoy anyone.

So I fail to see how USA could be safer than Finland.

I saw that report about the Isreali airport as well... the only thing I think Calpha left out was that you have to pass a "checkpoint" in your car before you actually get to the airport, it's 1/2 mile from the airport and your car is searched, and your ID is checked and run through "the system" so by the time you reach the actual airport a complete background check has been done on you.

btw I agree USA is never the safest place to be, probably Switzerland or something, or any other place that minds its own business :)

Yes, because the world is not just the US and "there be dragons there, people eat eachother" countries
