Safe Temperatures

I dont know if it belongs here but...what you´d say are safe temps for:

1. Athlon 64 3200+ Winchester
2. Geforce 6800 GS

I need to know because I want to know if Im going too far with OC

my 7800GT maxes around 65C on a 480/1200 overclock (even with a VF700 in a P180...wah!)

But my 6800U hit near 90C before I had put a VF700 on that over the summer...the core slowdown is at 115C I think...the GS prob will run cooler than the 6800U (probably, it better damn well run cooler!)

If you really want to spend another 30, just get a VF700 (or NV5 Silencer if you prefer that.)

EDIT: Videocards can easily hit over 70, I wouldn't worry there...I'd worry if it hit 85+.

you're dreaming with a stock agp 6600GT or 6800GT hsf to stay under 70'C under full load in a normal or warm room i'd say...

stock my agp 6600GT loaded up to 96'C, reseated it with as5 yesterday and my load temps have dropped to 87'C, which is awesome.

Yup, 6600/6800 series cards run notoriously hot. Mine (6800GT) idles at about 65C these days (since it's now sandwiched right up against another card after my motherboard swap), and loads at 90C (and maybe even a few degrees higher). However, I'd guess the 6800GS probably runs a bit cooler. In any case, you can't realistically expect these cards to run at as "low" temps as CPU's do. Keeping it under 85C might be a realistic goal (again, I'm not entirely familiar with the thermal properties of the 6800GS as opposed to the others in the 6800 series).

For the CPU...I'm still new to A64 overclocking (just finally upgraded to an Opteron 170 recently), but I'd recommend staying under 55-60C in general. I used to load as high as 65C on my old Athlon XP (and idle at 55), but I'd rather keep it lower than that now. Especially given that I already have my 170 at 2.5GHz and it idles at a low 35C 😉

Now that I have air conditioning, my temps are:

CPU Idle Load
32C 47C
GPU Idle Load
34C 58C

That's because of the XP-120 and panaflo fan.
I used to get

CPU Idle Load
47C 66C
GPU Idle Load
45C 74C

Brand new, all of my games kept the GPU at about 74C, but that never caused problems. From all I've read that's a little high, but still safe. Better case cooling brought my load down to the mid 60s, but air conditioning in the room is money!

my 6800nu never hits over 60 on load
