Safe temp. for AthlonXP 1600+

Hi guys.
I have a AthlonXP 1600+ operating at 55 C when idle and at 63 C when palying Q3 Arena. The ambient temp in the case as per the Soltek SL 75DRV4 software is 43 C. The room temp is around 37 C.
Is 63 C too high?
Please clarify.
Thank You.

Room Temp is 37C!! Where are you? The Sahara Desert? With room temps of 22-25C (normal room temps), your system temp should be 1-3C higher (w/ good ventilation), CPU should be roughly 6-8C higher than system temp at idle (w/ good HSF), and at load 12-15C higher than system temp (w/ good HSF). Your temps aren't bad for your room temp (if it is real, I'd move my computer to another room if possible).

37C room temp?? My room temp is only 20C!! How do you get 37C room temp in feburary???
My 1700+ runs with Volcano 7 and 2 case cooler 43C (Motherboard Monitor) normally.
Don't know why it's so low.

Guys, In India, the ambient temp varies from 30 to 41 C during March thru May. My room's just a little hotter than the outside which is about 35 C.
Now to the specifics:
The case is and AMD/Intel(P4) approved one whereas the fan is some Titan(TTC-D6T) ( I know it sucks but wasn't my choice; don't find decent fans here in India) 🙁
Anyway, when I open the case, the temps are as follows:
52C when idle and 56 C when stressed
Case temps are 38 C and 39 C
Thank you.

midtower atx, superlink psu, coolermaster hsf, xp1700

53C idle, 58+C @ load, 36C system, 16C "case"

it runs well but I would like to see those numbers lower

The AMD tech specs for XPs gives a max thermal die temp of 90 C. But I think most people would agree that an XP wouldn't last long if allowed to run near this temp.

63 C is a bit high, but probably won't damage the CPU in the short term. In the long term, it may decrease the life of the processor. I have my BIOS set to auto-shutoff at 60 C, but its never reached this high. Of course, lower is better, and I think most people should shoot for sub 50 C temps on the core under load. But then, I'm in San Jose, CA and we keep the room temps at more like 25 C. A 37 C room temp will make it more difficult (and just less comfortable for you too; sorry dude that's crazy hot)

Since the temps decrease when you open the case, it's a good bet that you could benefit some by getting better airflow through the case. My advice is to try and get better case fan(s), heatsink/fan and maybe some arctic silver thermal compound to go with it (can't hurt). If that doesn't reduce the temp much, then I would just live with it. If you can stand the heat, probably the AthlonXP will survive as well 😉

the best setup for your system would be a windtunnel, I have done this with my case.

it goes like this :

-2 front fans
-1 back fan + PSU backfans (I have 2 fans on PSU cous of enermax)

now my temperatures are :

open :

20/34/50

closed :

20/31/46

as u can see my case runs cooler when closed than open (partially cous I think when it's open it is completely messed up with the airflow...

anyway it makes oad of noise but might help u ...

Beware of the Soltek monitoring program for CPU core voltage, and the voltage reported in bios. There is something goofy going on. Instead of running default CPU core voltage, set it manually, and set it LOW. Try dropping it in .025v increments till it becomes unstable. Run it for a few days each time before dropping it further.

Read my thread HERE

i just opened the left panel of the case... even though the exposed portion is sitting against the wall of the table... everything dropped an avg of 6C 😀

though im gonna have to close it to sleep..

Thank You for all the replies. Will try lowering the VCore voltage and also try to install a chassis fan.
Any more suggestions will be gladly accepted.
ThankQ once again.😉

A case designed for good airflow should run with lower internal case temps with the door closed. If your case runs cooler with the door open, either replace the case or see if you can configure intake & exhaust fans for more efficient airflow through the case. I have Antec 1030 and it's fine with just 2 80mm L1A Panaflos exhausting air at the rear.

Next, install the most efficient cpu cooler you can afford. I have the Alpha 8045U @ $50 at NewEgg with moderate-noise Delta fan included.

I agree with Killrose about unnecessarily high cpu Vcore. My XP1600 is game-stable at 148MHz FSB with 1.775VCore. Any VCore above what's required for stability at a chosen FSB clock speed just adds cpu heat.

My system/board temp is just a few degrees above room ambient temp. With room temp at 22C, system/board temp is 25C, CPU Idle is 35C and max loaded CPU temp is 43C (cpu temps seem about 1C higher since I replaced the Antec case & PS fans with quieter Panaflo L1A fans).

Hope this helps!

I too stay in India (Bombay). The temps are pretty hot these days. But IMO you CAN find vendors selling good HSF's. I've seen good Coolermasters, T/right SK6 and the entire Volcano series at many shops over here. You may also buy a good HSF online / import it from abroad...Search and you'll definitely find them

Your case temps are high though. Make sure you got a roomy ATX case, Organise the wires and cables properly. Make sure you have a good exhaust. You'll need 2 fans besides the PS fan; one for intake located at the front and an exhaust at the rear. I also had to mod my case by cutting the fan grill over the rear exhaust.

Many vendors & users in India try to skimp on the parts for Athlon systems and then they badmouth Athlon systems. Unfortunately they don't realise the importance of quality parts.
