WASHINGTON ? Soon after President Bush's speech to the United Nations on Thursday, where he will lay out the case for ousting Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein, U.S. Central Command headquarters will start moving from Tampa, Fla., to an air base in Qatar, highly placed U.S. military sources told Fox News.

The sources said CentCom headquarters will start shifting people and equipment to Qatar beginning Friday.

The moving of the headquarters to the Persian Gulf is a very visible sign that the U.S. military is preparing for future operations against Iraq.

Qatar is situated about halfway along the west coast of the Gulf -- and recent improvements to the air base there have been significant.

The Al-Udied Air Base boasts the longest runway in the Gulf, and recent satellite photographs show how construction has improved not only hangers but troop barracks as well.

Yup.

Have you seen those dumb commercials "by" Qatar? Says they are with the American people during their time of rememberance. Ha.

More like "thanks for the bling bling you gave us for letting you build all those bases"

Bruno, Qatar's commercials are no less honest than the hundred commercials we'll see tomorrow on TV (actually I won't see them, because watching any channel and their played out Sept. 11th rememberances will be boring as hell).

Here's a preview of all the commercials:

[text]United We Stand.[/text]
[image]US Flag[/image]
[text]Brought to you by a company who cares blah blah blah[/text]
[much bigger image]Company Logo[/much bigger image]

I suspect by the time Saddam is actually ousted, this thread will be deep within the Anandtech Forums archives.

I don't think Qatar needs much "bling bling." They're a pretty damn prosperous nation.
