Saddam's French Connection

The threat by the Iraqi leader, published here for the first time in English, was reported in a 1992 French book, now out of print, titled "Notre Allié Saddam" (Our Ally Saddam). Here's what Saddam said:

As for financiers, industrialists and above all those responsible for military industry, the question must be put to French politicians: Who did not benefit from these business contracts and relationships with Iraq? . . . With respect to the politicians, one need only refer back to the declarations of all the political parties of France, Right and Left. All were happy to brag about their friendship with Iraq and to refer to common interests. From Mr. Chirac [now the center-right president] to Mr. Chevenement [the socialist former defense minister] . . . politicians and economic leaders were in open competition to spend time with us and flatter us. We have now grasped the reality of the situation [of France's support for the 1991 Gulf War, a betrayal in Saddam's eyes]. If the trickery continues, we will be forced to unmask them, all of them, before the French public.

this is most probably true, however the conservative minded Weekly Standard is quick to leave out the complicity of the Reagan Administration in providing Saddam with weapons, agricultural subsidies and other aid during the Iran Iraq War or the now infamous meeting between Rumsfeld and Saddam in which he only slapped him on the wrist for using chemical weapons against the Iranians, I guess it was "regretibly permissible" when they were used against a country we hated.

Perhaps you should start a thread entitled: "Saddam Threatens to Expose Reagan" then?

Didn't someone post a thread/post today or yesterday, about hussein threatening to expose the U.S/CIA or whatnot? Seems to me pretty much everyone has been in bed with hussein at one point or another (yes, that would include the French and the U.S).

So why doesn't the US let Saddam testify openly and take down Chirac. Even the French would be amazed that someone finally was able to nail "Chameleon Bonaparte", something nobody has been able to do for several decades. Chirac has always come back in a new form. Unfortunately the simple answer is that it is likely that the Saddam would embarrass a whole lot more "respectable" politicians throughout the west, including the US.

FLASH !

Saddam threatens to expose HIMSELF - on national TV !

That wouldn't be as revealing as Michael Jackson though.

LOL
i find the picture in the article interesting : 1975 chirac at that time was not president and therefore had little influence on general policy
and if saddam was albe to openly testify maybe chirac would take some damage but us would take a lot more trhough its differents presidents
