Saddam appears in court...

everytime i think this whole sorry episode in Iraq couldn't get any more ridiculous, something more absurd pops up...

amid a lot of fanfare about how America upholds the ideals of justice and fair play, Saddam has been produced in court to hear the charges against him and they forgot to make a lawyer available to him....!!!

the stupid judge reads the charges, and then insists that Saddam answer the charges right there... i mean, did this moron ever go to law school? or whatever passes for law school out there?

Saddam pointed fingers at the judge, defiantly declared himself the current president of Iraq, called GWB a criminal, and then refused point blank to sign any statement...

and as if this were some weird bad dream, some idiot allows all this to go on camera?? CNN just reported that in his hometown some folks marched holding up his portrait...

DO WE EVER LEARN????????

For credibility, with both Iraqis and the world, at large, it's important to present a trial that is obviously more fair than he ever allowed to any of his victims. That will, of necessity, give him an opportunity to showboat, but it will also allow him to be seen as the clown he is.

DeeKnow,

Not all legal systems are like that in the United States. It is only the arraignment, not the trial. He was asked to enter his plea, nothing more. You don't need a lawyer to enter a plea.....

I think this was very bad timing.

Iraq is still in toooooooo much chaos to fully appreciate the fact that they now have Saddam "The Butcher of Baghdad" Hussein in shackle and chains and prepared to meet his maker.

I think this has the possibility to incite the loyalists and anger them even more... who knows.. it just doesn't feel like the right time ..

What happens if the is not found guilty???

LOL. I was thinking the same thing when they caught him. Same with Bid Laden if they take him alive. Guilty men go free all the time due to poorly run prosecutions and technicalities, so it's not beyond the realm of possibility. Actually getting all the evidence you need, beyond circumstancial, is a BIG job and I can't see how they could have conceivably done all that so quickly. But he's in their custody now and as a newly autonomous country they can do whatever they like.

the judge looked pretty young too. they didn't actually show his face straight up, but he looked very young to me.

Something else I've been wondering, certain polls show that 40% of Iraq's citizens still support Sadam. If he was to run in the upcoming elections, even behind bars, you have to wonder how much of the vote he would get . . .

Don't they actually have some VIDEO of Saddam actually torturing/killing? I can't remember where I saw that...

naaaah... he's tooooo smart for that

remember Milosevic is still alive

NOTICE: Immediately after Saddam goes to court - Terrorist strikes increase and they try to hit even harder..

I mark this as a very dumb move from a very dumb administration.

It was only an arraignment. It was not the trial. That will not start until sometime next year.

I still think Saddam should have stayed in America until Iraq was more under control.. It just seems like having him back on Iraqi soil is going to do more harm than good to both Iraq and President Bush.

What makes you think Saddam was ever on American soil?

BTW, Saddam belongs to the Iraqis now. What they do with him is their business.

Wherever he was it wasn't close to his loyalists and previous members of his cabinet who I am sure see him and still want revenge against America.

I hope I am wrong.. but having him in Iraq is like bringing the Queen Bee home... just stirs up the nest

So why did you say "I still think Saddam should have stayed in America" if you don't have any idea that he was ever in the U.S.?

I certainly hope they give him a trial with reasonable rights and protections. He richly deserves the death penalty IMO, but if they give him a quick-and-dirty kangaroo-court trial, followed by a rapid execution, we will look very bad IMO. I think there's at least an argument that he should be tried by the war-crimes tribunal in the Hague (since I can't imagine a neutral jury of Iraqis being empaneled), but that forum does not have the ability to impose the death penalty, so that will never happen.

There is no way they would convict him if thier were a "fair" trial. As in, jury of peers. Half the country wants him back as president so I expect some kangaroo court of some type setup to obtain a guilty verdict.
