Sad tale of employee being laid off

My company owned 50% of another very very small company (15 employees) and bought the remaining stake for $5m. My manager went to do some auditing at their site, and was telling us he had to keep things hush hush because they are laying off 13 of the 15 workers. Among those 13 is guy in his forties with two teenage kids whose wife died just a month ago. Their family is already distressed - the guy is sort of going insane, taking days off work and just living aimlessly, and his kids are similarly distraught. Think how he's going to feel when he loses his job and has to support his 2 kids through school 🙁

ATOT lets have a silent prayer for him and his kids, and all others who have been affected by this financial crisis

That's horrible.

My company delayed a guys layoff for two weeks one time so his wife could have her baby and get back home. Everybody knew but him.

Sorry to hear that OP - very unfortunate. Hopefully something better (or anything at all) will come for that man.

dount want to sound insensitive... but what about the other 12?

Obviously they will all undoubtedly have a few months of unemployment / paid job retraining...
BUT Its just as shocking and depressing for them and their families to lose their jobs and source of income as it is for this man.
This might even be a plus for him, as he will be able to spend mroe time with his family during their time of loss.

Except for the whole no money thing and sitting in an empty house you used to share with your wife while your kids are at school.

Sucks ... surprised this hasn't gone P&N yet with the OPs SN.

why? Barack Obama doenst know anything about politics... 😛

I hope your dad isn't going to deliver the news personally. Some people go nuts and shoot up the whole joint when they feel like they've lost everything and have no hope. I'd just leave the dude a note on his desk with a nice severance check and get the heck outta there.

Not to be mean, but um, I hope you have some staff with concealed carry permits where you work.

Good time to be in antidepressant pharmaceutical sales though.

And booze.

There was an article in The Economist how the Scotch industry is totally kicking ass.

I wish I could afford scotch :^(

I'm lucky to get a few flavored drinks from the BigLots, and have coffee once per day.

Why does he have to put them through school? No one put me through school, I put myself through it. Sounds like he's going to have to take care of himself first before taking care of the luxuries of kids + school.

That is really sad. It will be very difficult for him to hold it together. Any of the big three stressors in life happening in the same year is enough to break anybody - loss of spouse, loss of child, loss of job. Happening within a month is brutal.

While that sucks for him, I don't feel bad for him. Where was his insurance? If his wife died, they should be set, shame on him for not setting that up. My mom raised me and my sister (starting at 11 and 6) on minimum wage because she had never worked before and couldn't get anything better for a job. We used food stamps and whoever ate the fastest got the most food at the dinner table and didn't go to bed hungry. They will be absolutely fine.
