Sacramento Fry's: ECS K7S5A+1.2GHz Duron for $99 thru 3/26

i don't know much about the duron's performance.
is the 1.2ghz duron faster than the 900mhz athlon thunderbird?
hot deal. I jumped on this when it was $109.

Definitely Duron1.2GHZ is faster than Athlon 900MHZ.

Duron 1.0G or above has new core. The new core Duron is as fast as
old TBird Athlon at same frequency.

I wonder if they'll let me trade up.

I just got the 950/K7S5A combo last week.

$10 more for 250Mhz and a better core, I think it's worth a shot.

edit: I haven't even opened the proc yet. hmmm. . .

That's my understanding also. And they will provide you price protection for 15 days should they lower the price after you bought it. I bought the K7S5A + a 950 MHz Duron for $99 back in December and they credited me $10 when they dropped the combo price to $89. Pretty cool.

<< Fry's is usually cool on cpu/board returns as long as it's within 15 days of your purchase date. >>

eightyk42, w/c san jo fry's was this at? The only combo I saw was a 1.7 with the fic mobo. Thanks in advance.

Dammit! Just got the 950 about 3 weeks ago. Oh well...

ADVICE: Make sure you don't get a motherboard that's been returned. It will have a sticker on it.

<< i don't know much about the duron's performance. >>

I got this combo when it was on sale for $89 about 6 weeks ago. The Duron is now sitting in my A7V and gives me the following SiSoft Sandra 2002.8.59 benchmarks:
Drystone-Whetstone-Integer-Floating Point aSSE
DURON 1.2GHz 3348-1674-6640-7714
Pentium IV 2GHz 3688-1040/2440 -7875-9625
Athlon XP1800+ 4240-2124-8370-9760
Athlon 1200 3295-1636-6610-8200
Pentium III-S 1.2 GHz 3390-1620-4405-5466

In other warts, the Duron 1200 with the Morgan core is about as fast as an Athlon 1.2 GHz and somewhat faster than a Pentium II-S 1.2 GHz.
On Pricewatch the lowball figures are this:
Duron 1200 $57
Athlon 1200 $78
Pentium III 1.2 $165
I don't know why anyone would buy either of the other two over the Duron 1200. The Duron requires less power and cooling than the Athlon. The Pentium costs 3 times as much for inferior performance.

One typical comment about the K7S5A is that it's not a good board for overclocking.

Try posting your question in the following forum also:

There's a sub-forum there with a number of posts on K7S5A overclocking:

And there's an associated website that has some fixes for a couple of potential K7S5A problems such as "data corruption" and "Lost CMOS":

I recently built my first PC with a K7S5A + 950 MHz Durom combo from Fry's and it's working great.
