Not too bad of a price, wish the CPU was retail. It's on page 3 of today's ad.

Outpost.com has fry's advertised specials. I haven't been able to find them, but does outpost have Motherboard + Cpu specials?

outhouse.com does have some of the fry's specials but not all, and i am too lazy to see if they have this one! this deal is warm but not very hot as the cpu is not retail!

Outpost doesn't have this deal, checked already. Otherwise I would've linked that too.

I'm pretty sure Fry's will not PM Outpost. If you get Outpost ads in the paper, you'll notice they have some fine print about how they won't PM. BTW why would you get a slower CPU and MB combo and pay more for it, unless retail and the warranty it comes with matters that much to you.

I guess the retail doesnt really matter all that much now that i think about it.

Ive never bought a mobo or cpu before, just been litsening to all on here. and theyve said go with retail

I guess if you insist on an XP processor this is a good deal, but I think they've had better. Picked up a retail 1.4 with the ECS motherboard for $149 on Wednesday at Fry's - it was a one-day only sale.

I understand people use the Athlons for game use, but how are they for digital video capture vs. a P4? I know...I should use the other forum...enlighten me, will ya?

here's a review and comparison on AT

"AMD is at the point now where they aren't only a fierce competitor on a pricing level, they are also significantly faster than the competition."

<< I would rather find a terrific price on a combo with Soyo Dragon Plus.... >>

Bay Area Fry's are offering the Soyo SY-K7V Dragon Plus with a retail boxed Athlon 1.4 Ghz CPU for the same price as the ECS/XP 1800 combo (which they are also offering).

The XP 1800 benches 7-9% faster than the Athon 1.4 GHz, but than again I think the Via KT266A might be a percent or two faster than the SiS 735 that the ECS board sports. Plus, though many folks have had great luck with the K7S5A, others have reported having to RMA it, batteries dying prematurely, etc. The Soyo has 3 DDR slots, but the ECS as 2 DDR slots and 2 SDRAM slots. Both boards have onboard ethernet & sound, but the Soyo board has 6 channel hardware sound with a SPDIF connector.

I thought the Dragon Plus was a RAID board, but the ad doesn't mention anything about a RAID controller.

The XP 1800 CPU actually runs at 1533 MHz. And I understand that the XP series goobles a little less power (and produces a little less heat) than an equally clocked Athlon C. Does anyone know which of these combos would place less demand on a power supply and cooling system? I understand that the ECS board can be a little picky about power supplies.

There is no Fry's where I live and I guess outhouse prices are higher because the Fry's B&M are using this item as a loss leader to bring people in the door in hopes of buying more profitable stuff long with it. Based on my limited prior experiences with boards PCCHIPS ( apparently ECS is PCCHIP company- the Amptron m830lmr is more or less the same board per The PCCHIPS lottery website ) I would be too apprehenesive to buy this one mailorder anyway - the RMA shipping costs would eat up any savings.

hey, this is a pretty good deal, just the OEM xp cpu alone in already around $210, and the ECS K7S5A is around $60. too bad I just spend the $$$ else where..

Oh by the way the XP cpu is around 15%-20% faster at video encoding.... even faster if you over clock....

Here is the link for the MB info.

null

It looks like a great board. Wonder why they still put serial and parallel ports on these MB's ... seems that it would be better to offer more USB ports (USB 2.0) or something in place of these legacy ports on the board. People that have legacy equip. could buy a board that is especially for legacy equip.. Oh well.

They had the deal in Portland at the Wilsonville Fry's and for me it was to good to pass up. Bought it yesterday and the board is stable and quite fast. So far just playing with it but it was almost like getting a free board at that price.

Only came as a bare chip and the boxed MB. MB instructions are not that good but if you have set up a few boards should not be a problem. Can either use 2xSDR or 2XDDR has onboard LAN . For a near free board seemed a good deal.

I just went to fry's last night and picked up an Epox 8KTA3L+ for $79. I heard this was a great board and was one of the better for running XP. I can get an XP 1700 for $130, so I figured I'd get them separate. This is still a pretty nice deal though :)
