EXACTLY. That and consumer reports have mostly un-biased opinions on things. Sure, you can get an idea of how a product looks or feels at the store that may justify it's purchase, but what about lifespan? With printers, what about the efficiency of ink usage? How often must it be calibrated? An in-store display may print beautifully, but does it require a special ink cartridge to print that way? You'd be surprised how many printers do.

McCarthy, I don't support a sabotage... I support doing your homework as opposed to trusting an item when what the display may be likely to perform different from what is in the box... whether it's better or worse.

You can read Consumer Reports before buying a car, but you still test drive it don't you? Doing homework is part of it, doing the testdrive is another part. Relying on those parts isn't lame, maybe I could go with lame if you buy only based on a review or only on how something looks in the store if we were talking about a major appliance. Not on something as cheap and disposable as a printer unless it's to be used in a high volume setting where that cost per page adds up to something.

Anyway none of the reviews or tests I used to see in Consumer Reports answer the question most pressing for me about printers - how likely it to have a dried out print head when you go to print something after leaving it sit parked for six months? Nope, I don't print much. This danged HP932C of mine which has printed maybe 100 pages in four years is going to need it's third cartridge if I ever hope to get another page out of it. Think I'll just throw it out the window and go look at what OfficeMax has on display.....

....just kidding.
