S754 mobos with IGP: VIA with S3 Unichrome or SiS with Mirage 2?

What for? SiS are notorious for driver problems when it comes to video overlays and MPEG accelerator, but seem to run better for 3D applications. VIA in turn focus on proper media support.

Seeing as both are rather abysmal in 3D speed, I'd go with VIA.

The last point makes it VIA, quite clearly. Last one I had hands on recently was the KM400 Unichrome with DDR266 RAM and a Duron-750 (no kidding!), a system built from leftovers plus a new board (an ECS). Despite the stoneage components, CPU load whilst viewing DVD was below 40 percent. Impressive. K8M800 has Unichrome Pro, which does even better in that regard.

and one more thing...does it matter what version of hardware directx the unichrome igp has? i mean does it make a difference for what i'm interested in using it for? Thanx!

The important thing is that the drivers support the current DX level - and they do.

just realised there's radeon 9100 and 9100 pro as well...what are the differences between the two? are they better than unichrome?
