A colleague has dropped his S4 and the glass is broken. All touch works. Does he need a digitizer or just the glass screen.Or is it the same?

I believe the AMOLED fuses it all together to make it thinner. So it'll be a full screen replacement.

They are but on the S4 it is a bitch to separate the two.

Need to do hair blower and such? So, its easier to get the whole assembly (digitizer)? Poofy, have a good purchasing source? Ive never done one and this guy is literally on his fourth S4. His insurance said nope.

After looking at videos to remove the glass I have told him a digitizer is the best way to go. His screen is too shattered to easily remove just the glass as no suction cup will be able to grip it and I am not slicing up my fingers getting all the little bits of glass out.

Yes. And its all VERY delicate. Like even experienced people can take hours. Much easier to buy the who thing.

I unfortunately do not have a good source though. Knock on wood I haven't had to replace mine yet because I am now religious about glass screen protectors.

These seem to have good reviews and just slightly high prices compared to Chinese on Ebay:
