S3 question: Feel dumb for asking but...

Admittedly, I'm a Smartphone noob... That said, I've "googled"...

This can't be that hard.

I'm looking for a way to dump my contacts to an internet site to edit them via PC. Then, synch them back to my phone, etc...

I thought gmail would have something slick to do this... Went to my gmail account and nothing... Just some nebulous vanilla screen for contacts -nothing about synching with the S3 that's plugged into my PC, etc...

Can anyone help?

Its automatically done. You don't have to have your phone connected to the computer. Just log on to your google account, change what you want in your contacts and they will automatically migrate to your phone.

EDIT: Conversely, if you make changes on your phone they will automatically be reflected when you log on to google from a PC.

Yeah, gmail to phone (like the reverse) is done by magic over your data connection (and it's fast). Google calendar entries are updated both directions in the same way.

For PC to gmail, click on the "gmail" dropdown under "Google" in the top left corner. That will give you a "Contacts" option that will take you to the contacts manager page. You get to the import option under "More" on the top row.

If the contacts were imported from a non android phone by the shop where you bought it they most likely weren't saved as google contacts, which is what they need to be in order to show up when you log in to gmail. Open the contacts app, hit the file key, and then select "merge with google". If that doesn't work, try exporting them to the sdcard, then open the file on the sdcard and merge, save, add or whatever option it gives you as google contacts.

FYI - All contacts under you're login can be seen and edited at:

http://www.google.com/contacts/

As said, any updates to said contacts will automatically update to your phone as long as that account was used when setting up the phone or if it was added later if you use multiple logins.

Err, no. I get spam in my Gmail all the time, but none of them show up in my contacts. How, exactly, does a spammer "use" one's Gmail?

As others have pointed out, the syncing is done by the phone. Just make sure you clean up your contact list before doing it. Also, my phone wanted to (and did, before I knew better) sync my contacts with all three of my email accounts. I should have limited it to just Gmail, and spent a bit of time cleaning up duplicates.

Only if they're saved as contacts.

EDIT: And if you have duplicates from multiple accounts you can manually associate them. Takes a bit of time but may not be completely necessary if there is only common information between the duplicate contacts.

Nope, only people you've manually contacted at least once. And not businesses or automated inboxes either. Google is smart enough to figure out who's a real person.

I was impressed the first time I used a G1 actually. A lot of shit was done for me when I first logged in. Made me like gmail even more.
