s2000 vs. mazda 6, 0-60 even

i've got an 04' mazda 6s and he just bought an '04 s2000. quick specs,

mazda6
[*]v6
[*]220hp
[*]atx

s2000
[*]i4 vtec
[*]240hp
[*]mtx

from both a dead start and 40mph rolling, we were both neck and neck. to top it off, i've got some heavy 18" wheels on my mazda. there's really no way i should be able to keep up w/ him. wtf is he doing wrong?

The problem your friend is having is that he's apparently got a "V4" in his S2000. Given that there's no such thing as an S2000 with a "V4," I'd suggest your friend contact his dealership right away.

You've really gotta abuse that s2k to get it to go fast, especially from a stop. Driving it "normally", even though he's close to redlining on every shift won't get the job done. You should ask what gear he was in at 40. If he wasn't in 2nd then that would explain it...

exactly what I was going to say also. hes gotta be reeeeeeeealy high in the RPM to make power at 40mph. I'm not sure if 40mph is the very top of 1st or the mid-2/3 of 2nd.

He has to drop the clutch at high RPM to get advantage of the 240hp.

well from a rolling, he dropped down to second and i still kept up. (the 6s' computer also punches down to 2nd gear when i floor it)

and whoops, changed to the inline 4.

In my car the top of 1st is about 40 but my redline is "only" 7800 so I'd imagine either the s2k is geared even lower or it tops out faster in 1st.

I've got a VTEC engine as well hence I made the comparison...

Firstly, it's a brand new car - he should not be beating the piss out of it regularily, if at all.

Secondly, it's a brand new car - give it about 5000 miles, it'll loosen up.

Thirdly, it's a brand new car - he may not be used to the car enough to get it going as quickly as you can with your 6.

So yeah, find the root cause. 😉

he bought it used, it's got a little over 8k on the odometer.

Scratch 1 and 2 then. He driven anything similarily gutless at low RPMs before, or has he been taking torque for granted? 😉

i'm not sure what gear he was on at 40, but i'm gonna guess it was 2. and the s2k has 6 gears IIRC.

i'm not sure, i just think that he doesn't know how to push his car yet. he's only had it 3 weeks. personally, i'd try and find the limitations of my car the first day out if it already had a few thousand miles on it.

He probably doesn't realize that in an S2000, the fun doesn't come until the little lights sweep north of 6K. 😀

if you suck at driving stick you are not going to beat an automatic.

if you are ok at driving stick you can probably keep up

if you are really fricking good at stick you can probably win

this comparison is mostly about the same car, but i'd imagine the S2000 is at even more of a disadvantage... a 'vette at least you can suck at stick and the torque will save your ass...

Yep. I love keepin' my need past the redline on my tach😉😀

As much as I like the s2k, of all the times I've been to the drag strip, I'm not sure I've ever seen an s2k get past low 15s. Motortrend had a magazine time way back when of 13.8 so I'm really curious how the hell they got that time.

Anyways, these high rpm, small displacement cars, the results vary really widely. Some people get crazy times out of them, some get mediocre ones. The celica is like that also, some people get crap times while others get into 14s.

The thing is, an auto 6s isn't even that fast of a car.

Punishing the transmission and tires with drops from north of 5K does the trick.

... or actually turn the steering wheel for that matter. 😕

Doing a 5-7k drop on a manual supposedly wears out the transmission and clutch pretty quickly. In a race though, aside from dropping the clutch how else are you supposed to get a manual to perform at it's peak?

In an automatic, when the light turns green and you floor it does it do as much damage as dropping the clutch on an automatic?

Before when I drove automatics I actually dare to pull up side by side beside the next car, watch the light turn green and pull ahead of him and into his lane. Since I've been driving manual though I've never done that. Partly because the inline-4 has horrible torque and I don't want to wear down the tranny/clutch so I can pull away from a slow moving granny. I'm not confident the car can beat ANY car beside me at the light. Plus the tires are worthless when it comes to traction.
