Total = $997 shipped(whoo close...) but itll most likely be over $1k because some of these prices are after rebate... EDIT: now like $1015 cuz of stupid DVI cable... another EDIT: back down to $995 because i got rid of fan controller yay!

and probably some other crap ill add on like lights and gizmos and stuff, and maybe an X-Fi and some Z-5500's. Speaking of which, is it really, honestly, a HUGE improvement in sound overall when you switch to an X-Fi? If it is not that noticable and the main advantage is lower cpu usage, then I'm staying with gool ol' integrated sound, it seems that I'll probably be fooled by the Z-5500's sound quality and think that it's the X-Fi doing all the work if I bought it in the first place with all the other components.

Here we go with the questions:
1)I'm probably gonna overclock the cpu/gpu(pretty highly), and add a couple of more drives later, is 330 watts enough? I keep hearing the 90% of systems don't reach anything near 330 watts even during 100% load.
2)Do you guys think the system above is good or is it crap? I am open to suggestions, as long as this ties up at around $1k.
3)The best thermal paste right now is the arctic silver 5 right?
4)Do you guys think it's worth it to upgrade to a Samsung 740b? Is there any sort of image quality differences that can be noticed between an Acer and a Samsung? I was just wondering if it would be worth it to spend ~$40 more for just a popular brand.
6)Final question: would I be damaging/shortening the life of the northbridge if I run it passively using the Zalman 47J? I was gonna get a Swiftech cooler with a 40mm fan on it, if it does damage the northbridge, but am worried about clearance problems.
thanks!

I'd say no.

For a PC like that anything below 400W is dangerous. According to the calculator that's floating around my system draws about 430W at full load... and remember, you need to allow for +15% at boot.

Contrary to the previous poster, I believe the PSU should handle that just fine.

The calculators that are floating around are terribly inaccurate. The most power hungry thing you have in your computer is a 6600GT, which is far from being a beast by any measurement. Athlon 64s also use up a lot less power than a P4, even when overclocked. That PSU is high quality and can handle that without a flinch.

are you sure? I mean, I agree with the Opetron, yes, but I was doubting it because it's actually made for servers I heard. What I'm questioning is the PSU, in which, has a solid 470W or something like that, plus it's an Enermax. However, the P series is getting a bit old and I wonder how noisy that thing is and how efficient that thing is(top priorities in a PSU for me). If I have to, I will pay the extra money to get a Seasonic because power bills later on will save me more money. So I guess I'll get a S12-430 then??? I'm confused, some person said 330w is enough, but if I get a higher wattage PSU, uhh im confused... I still might get a higher wattage S12 because if I get a 330, it will be on full load too much and I'm thinking it might shorten life+more heat, instead if I get a 430 or something like that, I'll have some headroom. I don't know, I do have a budget limit, and I don't want to just get more wattage, cpu power, it goes on forever there's no limit, so I might just cut myself off before I end up spending $3000... Then again, I'll be keeping this for a couple of years at least, I don't know if I should buy components that'll leave some headroom.. jeez this is confusing.. BTW, meuge, how's your Swiftech NB cooler working? could you post some temps on load? how did it fit? how much clearance do you have from the GPU?

Well, that's what I was told anyway. Personally I still have a lot to learn about computer hardware -- you sound like you've done more research than me, so just do whatever you want. (Yes, now you have permission. 😛)

Now that I look at the AMD site, it does have the Opteron under "Server Processors".

1. The 330 watt S12 is enough, this doesn?t have to debated anymore?.

2. I would choose the VF-700 over the AC coolers.

3. The ZM-NB47J will be enough as long as you have some air flow in your case, it will still run hot however.

4. Skip the Nexus fans and look for "Yate Loon", which is the same exact fan as the Nexus minus at in line resistor.

5. I would also recommend you look into using SpeedFan to control you're system and CPU fans over any hardware controller.

where can I find yate loon fans? I've heard of them but I heard you have to undervolt and stuff to make it equivalent of nexus fans... oh yeah im gonna get a fan controller sweetness ok never mind. so where can i find them? also, ill take your advice and get the Zalman. thank you all!

You can buy Yate Loons here. With Speed Fan you don't need a fan controller. Connect the CPU and system fans to the MBs fan headers and let SpeedFan control the fans, or let the BIOS of the MSI board do the controlling.

you're sure they're the same as nexus right? 28db doesn't seem so silent to me... btw, what are in-line resistors? im assuming it doesnt even matter since im getting the yate loon fan anyways. does anyone know if the scythe ninja+a 120mm fan will actually fit in the mobo im choosing?

Jab-tech usually has the medium speed Yate Loon fans (oo, they have a black one, cool). At full speed, it won't be silent (but consider that 28dBA should be at 1m away, and that's whisper volume). Add a Fanmate 2 to your order, and you'll be set.

Unfortunately for Speedfan, many good quiet fans have torquie(sp) motors, which tend to growl when using PWM (which cuts out portions of the power signal to the fans). The Zalman Fanmate is a linear voltage controller (actually lowers voltage, resisting off extra power), easy to mount, and well-priced.

I am VERY confused. I asked other people about the Monitor, and a person said definitely get the Samsung, but now the Acer is suggested.. WTF? BTW, the SLK3000B is $40 shipped at Amazon.(or rather i saw it at that price a couple of weeks ago) Also, I don't consider myself a hardcore gamer so I see the 6600GT enough for me.... I plan to get the NB cooler because the stock one will inevitably be very loud.

Samsung has a 0 dead pixels garuntee for the first six months. Hence, they got an instant popularity boost.
