I have an S-Video out on my laptop and I connected it to my older philips TV...28"?

and it only produces black and white, which really sucks! How can I make it color? I have a 15foot SVideo cable and a 2 foot one, both produced black.

S video has 4 connections in it

Y+Ground = Luminance Channel or B/W

Cr/Cb+Ground = Both Chroma Channels Orthogonally multiplexed = Colors

Your Chroma channel pin might be bent and not making contact.

A friend of mine had the same problem a long time ago, the way he fixed it was by installing the newest drivers at the time and boom, worked. I don't know if this'll work for you, or if you already have them installed, but worth a shot.

Is the PAL/NTSC setting correct?

The two systems are compatible for B&W, but incompatible for color.

Last time I ran into this problem with someone, this was the issue (they had it set to PAL).

so the TV is set to PAL? Or my laptop is set incorrectly in settings?

I cant really upgrade my video card on my laptop, its an Acer Aspire 5670 (x1400 w/ 512mb hyper memory). In other words , I can only upgrade if Acer puts out some updated drivers.

I would check the Laptop video settings. There may be an option for NSTC / PAL there. You want NSTC.

Just checking - are you using an adapter of some sort to get s-video out, or it is giving you s-video straight out of the laptop? Not all adapters work exactly the same so you need to get one that matches your computer. If you're getting s-video straight out, then that shouldn't be an issue.

When I had this problem, I found out it was due to a setting in the nVidia control panel. The setting asked what type of connection was used for TV output (S-Video, composite, or Autodetect). I set it to S-Video and it began working fine. Look around in the ATi control panel for a similar option.

I had a friend with that issue. He'd forced the plug into his t, bent some of the wires so it wasn't transmitting color. Fixed it by buying another S-ideo cable (tried to unbend the pins, one fell off).

I have S-Video strait out of my laptop, then I connect this to the proper RCA lookin cord and it hooks up to my TV via the Video-IN.

btw, is it possible to get sound on the tv instead of just my speakers on my laptop?

You might need a colour-fixer. It can probably be bought at your local TV-dealer.

Did that cable come with your laptop?

These adapters can have different pins connected to different things depending on the brand.

Is there an option to change the output of your TV-OUT to RCA / Composite instead of S-video? Depending on your adapter, it may need to know that you're trying to do composite output rather than s-video.

Just as an example that there's more here than just plug it in, this is an example of an "s-video to composite" adapter that I have.

vs what the pins are for s-video

(sorry the pics are blurry, I took these a while ago and wasn't very careful about it)

So anyways, this adapter might not be the right one to give you the right results. If it did come with your laptop then
If it has the right number of pins and fits, you're probably good.

As for the audio, much easier to get right.
https://www.cablesforless.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=106 + your own RCA cables
or
https://www.cablesforless.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=889 (or whatever length you want).

Go from line-out (or headphone out) of your laptop to the audio input on your TV / receiver.

Try some different cables.....color is the first thing you lose with cheap, faulty, too long cables.

I went back and read again. The first thing to try is connect the S-Video out from the laptop to a tv which accepts S-Video. That'll at least confirm or deny if it's PC or connector/TV.

After searching the internet for hours I got pissed of and cut my s-video cable in two. I found to get colour, rewire the cable. Use a 4pin svideo plug (even if the computer has a 7pin). There seems to be no standard. It seems to work with pins 1,3 & 4 connected without pin 3 (trial and error). See wikipedia for what the pins are for.

WAIT!!! I've just discovered, this only works if you attatch display '2' in display properties while pins 1 & 3 are connected, THEN after applying, connect wire 4. Very bizarre.
P.S. Although this is not the first time I've experienced this problem on many computers, this is the first time I've found a fix. This specific computer is a Compaq Presario R3000 Laptop with WXP Home and all the latest updates and drivers. Video is ATI Mobility Radeon 9000/9100 IGP. Date today: 2 Oct 2006 04:33 NZ time.

Updated. This refers to S-video to RCA.

two. I found to get colour, rewire the cable. Use a 4pin svideo plug (even if the computer

has a 7pin). There seems to be no standard. It seems to work with pins 3 & 4 connected to the middle RCA pin. And S-video pin 1 to the negative charge (the wire surronding the RCA wire). Pin 2 goes to nothing. (trial and error). See wikipedia for what the pins are for.

Check the settings in the ati control panel. I was getting only black and white with my x700 and S-vid, ended up just needing to change a setting to get color, athough I can't recall which setting it was at the moment, but I think it was in the displays manager section.
