Thought it worth mentioning Steam has STALKER on sale for $5 USD until Nov 02. -edit- Sale is over -edit-

Getting a bit old, but I fond it worth replaying a few times. Also note that there is no DRM listed on Steams page which I'm 90% sure means there is only Steam itself for DRM.

Perhaps people can post their favorite mod(s) for those who might be interested. I myself liked the Oblivion Lost mod.

Good game, but also... a great repost.

I don't know if it's me but I can't seem to get into it. I always die by some stupid radiation wind crap or all the people turn on me and kill me.

You have geiger counter which will make clicking noises when you get close to radiation, the faster the clicks the more radiation there is. When your screen starts to lose color, it means your exposed to a lethal amount of radiation and must run away quickly, and you will require anti radiation drugs or large amounts of Vodka. Radiation zones do not move.

If people are turning around and shooting you, look at what you just did. Either they will shoot you or they won't. Each faction wears different armor, some will always shoot you on sight, some can be made not to shoot you on sight and others you have to provoke them to shoot you on sight.

I, like you and many others, took a while to get into the game. But once I did, it was well worth the effort. One of my favorite games yet! Once you get the better weapons and upgrades, it sure gets more entertaining. Just stick with it for a little while, and it is a very good game once you get the hang of it. Also, rebind the Bandages to something more convenient (I think it's defaulted to "]" or something). That one was a big help in staying alive.

This game is WELL worth the $5 to anyone who hasn't played it yet!!

Oh so tight. I'll definitely pick this up for five bucks! Thanks for posting! I just finished building my new PC about a week ago and have been looking for some cheap, unplayed games to pick up.

This game is somewhat similarly themed to Fallout 3 no? I'm playing FO3 right now and really enjoying it. I'm sure I will sooner or later play SSoC as I already had it purchased via Steam.

the similarity is SP fps and blown up wreckage. other than that, nothing.

for new players, i suggest immediately installing Smart Mod Manager and Zone Reclamation Project.

I never bothered with the game after reading numerous "not worth the effort" post over the past year or two, but for $5, I finally picked it up.

GREAT GAME.

I'm roughly half-way through (by my estimation), and the game is really enjoyable. Originally I was trying to do every side quest and find every stash, but I quickly realized it's pointless. Now I just do whatever seems interesting, and often go into new zones for no reason other than to explore (which often yields weapons that'll help with the main story progression).

I actually find the stock 50 kg limit to be somewhat enjoyable. It makes me really think about what I want to bring with me when I go somewhere - for example, I'm limited to 2-3 weapons, about 30-40 bandages, 3-4 pieces of food, 300 ammo, and some miscellaneous items like anti-rad drugs and med kits. Without the limit, I'd be running around with virtually unlimited ammo, a battalion's rations worth of food, 5-6 different guns, and 40 med kits.

Most of all, I really like the combat. Running in like Rambo often (realistically) gets you killed, and sneaking around picking off targets isn't always effective - when a body is discovered, or if you miss a headshot, you may find yourself in the center of 5+ angry targets. I'm playing on the second-highest difficulty (first play-though), and my only complaint is that my own weapons don't seem to do enough damage. That just makes me aim a bit more carefully, though.

Until Monday, November 2nd would mean, to me, that all dates prior to the 2nd will fall within this sale period. Once Monday, Nov 2nd comes around, you're too late.

Don't open any presents until Christmas day! Well, today is Christmas day and it's time to open presents.

They should have removed "75% off until Monday, November 2" by now.

Wow, I just got down into the lab. I thought the sewers were bad, but this place really puts me on edge.

This game is the first one that's actually creeped me out in a while. HL2's Ravenholme was a bit creepy, but that was short-lived. Left 4 Dead is more of an action game than horror, and Doom 3 could be described as "run around as fast as you can with the shotgun out."

The X-18 Lab... yeah, tough place to sustain, it gets me very nervous when I get there, I usually try to avoid going there when I use my headphones, it's one of the most deeply atmospheric locale in video gaming I've experienced. I can't wait to see if Call of Pripyat also offers a similar place, because Clear Sky lacked any such levels, with the slight exception of the Red Forest, but it's short lived.

This game crashes on every PC I've tried to play it on. Granted that's only two, it's still incredibly irritating. I have never been able to play for more than about 10 minutes without CTD. And then the save game gets corrupted. On two completely separate machines. Ugh.

Both Labs were so creepy, that my first time playing through I just couldn't bring myself to go through them a second time. Stalker SoC has such great atmosphere.

Fallout 3 is a great game too and it's similar in many ways to Stalker, but the atmosphere is completely different. Stalker really feels Lonely and Scary. Fallout 3 is more about how messed up the World has become. It has some creepy parts, like the Dunwhich Building, but it's not nearly the same.

I bought this game around the time it came out and it was buggy as hell...it sat on my shelf for awhile...

I found this thread and found the Stalker 2009 Mod and fired it back up.

I thought it was fun the first time around (until I quit) with no mods or patches...

But fully patched and with the mod in place this game I am having a blast...still trying to figure some things out so it is kind of like walking in the dark...I accepted too many tasks and now have only a little time to get them all completed (just like friggin' WORK)...

I can say this is probably the only game that has caught me off guard and freaked me out where I actually jumped at my desk...those fucking blood sucker things pop up and you aren't expecting it...lets just say I am glad no one was watching me play the game cause I am sure it would have been a good laugh...

Good game!

This is one of the finest games ever made.

This. It's the atmosphere that makes it. The sense of dread, the sense of desolation. Sure makes you feel like your in a wasteland. Funny how I enjoyed this one so much but can't get into Clear sky really...

I glad you like the Stalker 2009 mod, before I played the game my friend recommended to go Army Warehouse BEFORE you go to Yantar Lab 18 and LabX 16 and get the Nato sniper rifle from the Merc, of course you must play politics with Durty and Fredom and get thought a village with four Bloodsuckers but here you get the best weapons before going Red Forest, you can even go first to Army Wearhouse and later get the Lab 16 it makes the game better with powerful weapons.

My only problem is the chronic inaccuracy. Might as well just drink vodka all the time. It could only improve accuracy with AK-47s and lower.

I agree completely. :)

Funny how I enjoyed this one so much but can't get into Clear sky really...
Clear Sky didn’t have the feel of desolation and loneliness because there was a substantial faction presence in almost every zone. What Clear Sky did well was artifact hunting, equipment upgrades, and flash drive hunting. I loved poking around every dark corner with my detector, and also getting those flash drives. Also making custom armor and assault rifles was immensely satisfying.

Also the Red Forest was quite different to the locations in the first game.

I loved both games equally, and I’m sure Call of Pripiyat will be just as good.
