I think DX10 will work over DX9 pretty bad in the coming year... once vista sp1 is released (and probably before), gamers will jump ship on XP in droves.

I have one friend who is working on a DX10 game, and another friend who owns his own game/multimedia company.

From what I have seen of DX10 action versus the latest and greatest DX9... DX10 walks all over DX9. I am literally installing vista this weekend based in part on what I have seen of DX10 content... I will put up with the bugs, short-term lower performance so that I can play DX10 content ASAP.

As I understand it from my friends, as DX10 driver and engine development "develops"... DX10 will render higher def content at higher FPS than DX9 (on the same 8800 or R600 card).

All that being said, I think I might just buy STALKER... I have been "STALKing" it for quite some time. If it gets good reviews, or if I get chance to play the beta and like it, I'll buy it.

What DX10 content will you be playing right now?

Sweet, another quality FSP up for a soon release.

I hope it lives up to it's hype. The free-roaming scratches me where I itch. 😛

Amazing. This game looks great. It's odd that I've only heard about it in the past 2, maybe 3 years at most. I guess it was during a time I didn't pay a whole lot of attention to computer games. I certainly remember Prey, DNF and many other back in like 1999 CGW. 🙂

Unless this turns out to be a huge flop, I'm probably buying it. I'll wait a couple of weeks for reviews. As long as it doesn't turn out to be a Prey or something like that. The Gamespot preview said the game looks dated, but I don't really think so. Compared to very high quality, upcoming games like Crysis it does, but compared to the average FPS, it looks excellent (computerandvideogames.com seems to have nicer screenshots than GS). All around the graphics look great especially for how long the game has been in development (it's pretty tough to do a complete re-work and use a new engine halfway through, though major improvements had to have been made). Source engine still is one of the best IMO, and that is from 2004. A pity that commercially it is almost a flop considering how very few games have come out using it. I thought sure it would be the engine to use for many 2004-2007 games. I don't have any problem whatsoever with the graphics in STALKER judging from many screenshots. And the gameplay sounds phenomenal!!

In addition, with a not so demanding game, the graphic levels can be turned up higher and AA/AF can likely be used. It sucks that games like RB6:Vegas are so ridiculously demanding that even my Opty 146/7800GT can only manage 1024x768 with mid to low details. Some parts still looked okay, but compared to 1-2 year old games that I can run 1680x1050, maxed with AA/AF, the old ones look much better. Even that Infernal demo. At 1680x1050 high details (no AA/AF), that game had amazing graphics and did not slow down at all the whole time. So given the length of development time for STALKER, the engine should be not very demanding and very polished.

just to clarify, and it's probably a noob question, but my x1900xt is dx9 only right? No dx10 features ever? That's only the 8800 currently?

Correct. Only the 8800 series at this time supports DX10. However, you will be able play games that utilize DX10, just won't be able to get DX10 effects.

Plus you will need Vista if you want anything in DX10. Man, these upgrades just get pricier and pricier. 🙁

keep dreaming 😛

there are NO "full Dx10 games" coming for AT LEAST another year
:Q

and there is *nothing* that can be done in DX10 that cannot be done in DX9 ... with current games ... *all* you will get with these half-assed Dx10 games [like Crysis] is more efficiency and higher textures

that will *change* in a couple of years .. but don't hold your breath
[you will turn blue] 🙁

😀

That is true, but really anything could be done with DX9. There is nothing really possible to "add."

This is what is better with DX10. The things that were very demanding to do with DX9 will be MUCH more efficient with DX10. This will allow developers to do more, and simultaneously. And this is probably all we will ever see with future versions of DX, more and more efficiency.

of course ... you understand we are talking about the *future*

games built-from-the-ground-up with DX10 ... games that have only recently began development.

Crysis and the other "dx10 games" are DX9c games that have been in development for years . . . the Devs "added" DX10 *features* [i.e. higher res and textures] ... and these will be patched over a year or so to resemble *full Dx10 games* as the DX10 HW base grows.

i'm in no rush to get a DX 10 card - now - that will *struggle* with real DX10 games in a couple of years. 😛
