http://www.bit-tech.net/bits/2007/02/05/win_a_stalker_beta_key/1.html

want a STALKER MP Beta Key? ...
you got till Fri night ....

he full game is out, for sure, on March 23, and we've been playing the single player for the last week - watch out for our preview soon.

Here's the blurb:

In 1986 the world's most horrific nuclear disaster took place in Chernobyl. After subsequent unexplained explosions in 2006, a military zone is set up preventing access to this area. Stories of huge anomalous energy disturbances and strange sightings within the Zone are rife. Only the foolhardy or insane venture in.

After having been found unconscious in the zone, you have become a S.T.A.L.K.E.R., a mercenary paid by scientists and other undisclosed groups, searching for strange artifacts, information and technologies while striving to regain your memory.

However, you're not alone: rival S.T.A.L.K.E.R.S, military guards, mutants and deadly anomalous creatures stand in your way as you begin to unravel the mystery of the Zone and your own identity.

Whilst the hoi paloi have to wait until March to play, the wonderful guys at GSC Game World and THQ are offering 100 bit-tech readers a chance to get a sneak peek at the game early. Isn't that nice of them? All you have to do is answer our competition question and email us to be in with a chance to win.

the part i like is the March 23, for SURE! [!]

i *know* the title says 22nd ... so sue me 😛

😀

finally ... the first "free roaming" FPS since ...

since...

EDIT: 1/24/06 - Good News! ... it IS coming:

http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=37120

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. debuts on January 24th

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. IS FINALLY DONE.

While many readers and journalists started to put this game into the same category as Duke Nuk'em Forever, the Ukrainian game development team, GSC Gameworld, finally managed to polish the code and wrap up something which could be as big as the coming DX10 heavyweights such as Crysis and UT2k7.

In order to get all of those paper and on-line magazines ready for a March 22nd release, THQ teamed up with Omega Sektor. And so we shall see the dubiously named Stalkathon, a 24 hour press "marathon" with the final version of the code. Date is 24th to 25th of January, location is OmegaSektor LAN in Harrow, Middlesex.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. will be demoed in Omega Sektor prototype store, consisted out of 70 state-of-the-art machines consisted out of Intel Core 2 Duo and Geforce 7950GX2 graphics cards, but the final things will feature 8800 graphics cards.

Sadly, yours truly needs to do a little job in Italy, so I won't make it to the Stalkathon. But the review will be out as soon as THQ sends us the review code.

EVER SINCE NVIDIA launched GeForce3 - over half a decade ago - gaming magazines and on-line rags have been announcing STALKER, a game set in an alternative reality in which the Chernobyl disaster is "a bit different" to that recorded by history.

After the new Chernobyl explosion in 2006 (wasn't that last year? Oh wait, it was), a military zone has been set up preventing access to this area, and you find yourself inside the zone and become a S.T.A.L.K.E.R. ? basically, a scout for goods inside the zone.

Under the tag line "Man Made Hell", S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - Shadow of Chernobyl is hitting the streets on March 22nd, 2007 or a little bit more than one year after this imagined explosion happened.

The game will offer yet-unseen changes between night and day, and some awesome weather effects. The graphics have been updated a bit, but this game looked more than awesome even back in 2001, so the Russian authors could have a potential hit of 2007 on their hands.
it had to be theInq, didn't it 😛

😀

but, good news , i guess ... it's only been 6 years ... hopefully it won't be buggy oob.

I wonder if this will take advantage of capabilities of new graphics cards. I think I remember seeing an article about this about two and a half years ago and thought the game looked awesome. Since that we've had the release of xbox360 and ps3, and several computer games that take advantage of high end systems so I don't think anything is going make me jump out of my seat for this game...

I don't they'll delay it again. Previously they've said things along the lines of "Q3 2004" six months before the occasion, while this is not only a specific date but only two months away.

Lets just see if it pulls a daikatana.

If it pulls a mediocre-game-bashed-needlessly then I will be quite alright. Daikatana was basically just a buggy Half-Life. Much better than newer stuff like FEAR.

Think Fallout in first person with a really advanced AI system.

Don't new software games always release on Tuesdays? March 22 is on Thursday...
Nothing on the STALKER site but the same old news from June, saying it'll release in 1Q 2007, 8 days before the end of 1Q according to INQ stating the release date.

I just hope the game is good and not buggy as hell.

It deserved every bit of bashing it got. They hyped it like it was the next generation in FPS gaming. Remember this ----> John Romero is going to OWN you!!!!

"John Romero's about to make you his b1tch!"

God I hope STALKER isn't another Daikatana.

Gamespot had a good preview of S.TA.L.K.E.R. up before Xmas 🙂

Looking forward to it, especially as any HL2/Crysis action is "due" in the summer or later.

Sweet. A game on the PC that I might actually play...that'll be a revelation.

I hope the graphics turn out decent but I'm sure the gameplay will be the funnest we've seen in a while.

Everyone hypes their games. Just because Romero was an ass about it doesn't mean that the game deserves bashing as well. I ignore hype/bashing and judge games based on their quality, not the quality of the mental health of those making them. As such, Daikatana was a mediocre game of the likes of Gunman Chronicles and Half-Life: Blue Shift.

iD has always been overrated... even their original Doom engine was given too much publicity. They even admitted that it was technologically inferior to the Ultima Underworld engine, which was released one and a half years earlier, yet they still crown themselves kings of the first person shooter.
