So,
I connect(dial-up)16,400 up and down. AT&T cable will give me tv, but no internet. My local provider has wireless and if I wanna build an 60ft tower or convince my neighbor(whom I know not) to sign up and also be a re-peater. I can have service. My local phone co(WHOM I HATE AND WILL TO MY DYING DAY) has DSl but my # does not qualify!!!! What the hell is a guy to do?

Thank you for reading my whine.

I got a bigass antenna tower...Haven't put it up yet though. All I have is a discone antenna for my scanners, and I can't justify the effort just yet.

A new version of broadband?

LOL.

I feel your pain ChangLi. Every Sunday I go to my parent's house after church for dinner, and if I use the net there, it makes me miss my cable SOOOO bad, that I have to run home to it. 😉

A properly tweaked 56k hard modem with a good os and decent cpu makes for pretty decent web surfing actually.

I had this before i switched to broadband. The real benefit of broadband is in downloading files, but for the average surfer, 56k is still okay if done properly.

What REALLY sucks is when you have a slow ass cpu and a winmodem.

I agree, but the first huge game patch or other 10MB file you have to d/l makes you want to drop to your knees and make a sacrafice to the broadband gods.

Quit being a pussy and build the tower! 😀

ChangLi, that was about the best connection speed I typically got through the phone line here before I got DSL. You might want to check to see if another provider (via a CLEC, not an ILEC) such as Speakeasy can provide DSL service for you.

By the way, with Mozilla, you can significantly speed up your AT forum load time by blocking the big ad at the top of the page, the one from network.realmedia.com (right-click, select "block images from this server"). The only reason I advocate that is because that specific ad server is slow as molasses, while other ads seem to load just fine.
