S@H Question

All the recent space talk has got me interested in SETI again (there's a shocker) so I've decided to put SETI back on my new rig and I was just wondering which configuration would be optimal for crunching WUs/normal usage in my machine? I use my machine as a media server mostly (watch movies, tv, listen to music, record DVDs, encode video, etc.) and I do some game playing as well (RTCW, MOHAA, MSFS, IL2, JKII, etc.). Would it be better to run my 2x512MB PC3500 Geil RAM in dual-channel mode giving me effectively only 512MB of memory but with bandwidth theoretically doubling or should I keep my system in its current configuration using 2x512MB in single-channel mode for 1GB total memory? I average less than 512MB physical memory usage but at this particular moment I've only got 280 megs or so free out of 1 gig.
Also, could anyone tell me what the average WU crunching time would be for a system such as mine:
Barton 2800+ @ 3200+ (locked multi @ 175MHz FSB)
Asus A7N8X
2x 512MB PC3500 Geil RAM
ATI Radeon 9600 All-in-Wonder Pro (470/700) 😀
Win XP, plenty of HD space, well-maintained, blah blah
Any ideas? Also, why in the world is my o/c limited to 2.19GHz from 2.08GHz? That's the saddest o/c I've ever had from an AMD chip, let alone a Barton! Perhaps switching to dual-channel mode will allow me to unleash some of the potential of this beast?

Follow the link in my sig-line that says, "Click this to learn how to Join TeAm AnandTech and install SetiDriver.

Just follow the instructions and you will end up with your machine producing the most WUs possible. 🙂

Also run your memory in dual channel mode, both Seti and your media encoding will benefits from it.
Besides when you run in dual channel mode you dont loose half the memory, it just get accessed like one memory stick (of 1GB).

Can't say exactly how quick your rig will be but I can give you a good idea ,my main rig does average WUs in about 2hrs 28mins.🙂
Its got an A7N8X (v1.06),Tbred B XP1700 @2.04GHz ,2x256 PC2700 in dual channel mode,2.5-2-2-6

Don't play Freelancer do you?

The locked multiplyer is killer. If you could drop down to 11 and up the fsb to say 210, 215 that would put you in the 2.3+ range.

Thanks for the replies, guys. I've already got my system setup and crunching WUs (I've done this many times before) and I'll go ahead and switch to dual-channel mode to make sure I'm taking advantage of all the horse power I've got here.
Thanks again!
Oh, and sorry, I don't play Freelancer 🙁 The only games I play on my PC are MSFS, RTCW, and MOHAA.
Concerning the locked multi: I wish I had known about that before I bought the cpu, and perhaps I would've gotten a cheaper Barton that's pretty much guaranteed to clock higher than this thing is doing...

Hi Flyermax2k3, Nice to have you crunching again!🙂🙂

Concerning the locked multi: I wish I had known about that before I bought the cpu, and perhaps I would've gotten a cheaper Barton that's pretty much guaranteed to clock higher than this thing is doing...

I have one at 11x210 averaging around 2:10 hrs with a locked Barton2500+ on A7N8X Dlx (this one is XP1600 in the link below)
the other one is at 11x200 on a chaintec summit , also locked averaging around 2:25 hrs (Mini-Upstairs in the link)
So if your memory is good, you should get around the same times😀

As for the AMD's they are all locked since week 49 2003, so unless you can get one that's older (before week 29), you're stuck with locked
multipliers!:disgust:
I read that if you turn them in mobile cpus and run CPMRS, you can unlock them, but it doesn't work on
Nforce 2 boards. :|

Argh! I can't get my memory to run in dual channel mode even though they're a matched pair of Geil PC3500 512MB DIMMs :| I'm pissed! Can anyone help me on this? I've got one stick in the 1st bank and one in the 3rd which is channels 1 and 2 so I should be running dual channel, right? WTF mate?

dunno sometimes they color code the Dual Slot relationship. Might want to take a look at the MoBo instructions again. Mine were angled diffrently. But that was on a P4.

Reset the CMOS?
It definantly should work, somethings just being overlooked, try going over the the motherboards forum and see what they have to say.

Thats 12.5*175? It must be your memory. I have the exact same problem, my multiplyer is maxed out at 12.5 and I cant get my FSB higher than 175, even at 2.9Volts. I blame it on my Corsiar XMS memory (overclocking ram......yeah right).

Edit: just noticed that you are running PC3500 (218mhz), It must be that your (our) board just cant go higher than 175 FSB

Edit 2: to answer your question, my Barton at 12.5*173 has averaged 2:18 over the past 1466WUs

Try using differant slot's. On my board, 1 & 3, OR 2 & 3, OR 1,2,3 give Duel channel.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone, but as I've already mentioned, I've tried every slot combination possible and none provide dual-channel 🙁 I tried some of the popular Asus/Nforce2 forums and it appears as though this board really doesn't support dual-channel technology. This sucks.
On a more positive note, I was able to up the FSB beyond that 175 mark and have had it running stably at 177 since last night (crunching WUs all night) 🙂 I'm gonna head over to one of my local computer stores and see if they can hook me up with a phat air cooling solution.
Thanks again! And anymore suggestions on the o/cing just LMK.

What ver. MB and bios? on the 1.04 you have to run one of the newer bios for it to show the dual channel mode. Not sure about the newer versions.

According to WCPUID I'm using mobo version 2.xx and BIOS rev 1006. Remember folks, this is the A7N8X-X model. Argh! Those bastages tricked me...

Ah ,if you had of said A7N8X-X in the 1st place I could of told you it was single channel only😛😉
Those mbrds are good value for money.

I have the A7N8X & that's a v1.0x mbrd with dual channel but no raid etc
