I'm thinking of buying a few Seagate S-ATA HDDs purely for storage purposes so that got me thinking about the possibility to maybe connect them directly to an external connection through a S-ATA controller card without the need of an external enclosure.
That way greater speed would be achieved, the PCI bus speed being the limit as opposed to the USB2/Firewire speed offered by external enclosures, and the power woud be supplied directly from the computer as opposed to an external power brick...
I know there are lots of S-ATA cards with internal connectors, but is there any with external connectors (one would be sufficient)? At least in theory S-ATA devices are supposed to be hotswappable which would make this kind of feature, i.e. external S-ATA connectors, very useful....
If there is no such S-ATA card, what about simply extending an internal S-ATA connector with extension cables to the outside of the case? Has anyone tried this and if so did the hotswapping work without any problems? Obviously the best in that case would be to carve out place for the S-ATA connectors on an empty PCI plate an then attach the internal extension cable to it one way or another...
I'd like to hear what others have to say about this...
