Ryzen RAM

Gonna upgrade to 32GB for my Ryzen 1700 and I am curious what RAM is best compatible and has RGB? Haven't been keeping up. I have the latest bios x370 prime pro.

I would've thought Gskill Trident Z DDR4-3200 C14, but I don't see it listed in the Prime Pro QVL - as a matter of fact, I didn't see anything above 3000 listed for all 4 DIMM slots. Samsung B-die is probably you're best bet.

What is that max memory speed allowed when populating all 4 dimm slots with Ryzen these days? This part still confuses me as well as I see alot of people saying they use 3200Mhz, but then there are people claiming 3600Mhz and even some say as low as only 2666Mhz.I know using all 4 dimms puts a strain on the memory controller so are these people just using 2 dimms and not all 4??

You're going to take a speed hit whether you use 4x8Gb or 2x16Gb, but I think the 4x8Gb route is generally safer.

If I wanted RGB RAM for a Ryzen system, I'd get the best TridentZ stuff I could afford. Plus that would potentially put you in a good position for a Pinnacle Ridge upgrade down the line.

3200+ support depends on motherboard, CPU IMC, and quality of the RAM used. Your best bet to achieve 32GB 3200+ is with 4 DIMMs of RAM that use Samsung B-die ICs.

Example of when I first got 3200 CL14 4x8GB working on a Gigabyte K7 (IIRC it required a few more UEFI updates before it was stable out of the box without tweaking):

Unfortunately, RAM prices have almost doubled since Ryzen's launch... so B-die will be prohibitively expensive.

2133MHz with 2 DPC single rank configuration, 1866MHz with 2 DPC dual rank.
There is generally very little difference in the frequency between 1 DPC and 2 DPC single rank configurations in terms of the maximum achievable frequency.
Dual rank DIMMs are generally a major PITA on Ryzen and even 3200MHz on them is rather hard to achieve, regardless how good the DIMMs are.

16GB DIMMs no doubt have a better resale value, but if you want to use 32GB of RAM on Ryzen at high speeds I highly recommend you to get 4x8GB instead.
