Looking to upgrade my 5+ year old system in my signature to:

AMD Ryzen 3600X (Microcenter $80 deal)
Gigabyte B450 Aorus Pro Wifi ($95 after combo discount)
Crucial Ballistix 2 x 8GB 3200 CL16 ($68)
Total: 325

What I'll be re-using if possible:
Samsung 840 SSD from 2013
XFX RX 580 8GB
Seasonic Focus Gold 750W
Noctua D14 (How do i get an AM4 bracket?)
Cooler Master HAF932

I play CSGO @ max settings on a 32in Freesync Monitor 75hz @ 1440p. Everything is refund-able. Do you guys think this would be a good upgrade for the next 5-8 years?

My ram is Crucial Ballistix BLS2K8G4D32AESBK. is this compatible with my my new mb?

Also, for ~$70 is there any better ram? This seems to be an outdated ram and that there's a newer version?

I have that basic same system, bought at MicroCenter here in Dallas... it works fine. The RAM does work with my board, but only at 2400MHz, every time I enable XMP it crashes, and I've not had time to diddle with the settings. It is not on the GB QVL list, if that's what you are asking. For $70 that is decent RAM, I sprung for the 2x 16GB set... it was quite a bit more.

If you haven't already, drop a little cash on an M.2 SSD...

It is possible. You need to remove any and all specialty drivers currently installed or else the boot will fail.

What Torn said. You are going from an Intel CPU to an AMD... along with all the drivers, etc. Just for giggles, I tried to boot into my old (2500K) OS SSD, and as soon as Windows booted, it crashed... but I did not uninstall all the drivers, either. I'm half tempted to try it... as a practical exersize... but I wouldn't expect any long-term stability.

Supposedly, W8 and W10 are more adaptable than 7, so it is worth a dare to do an unaltered swap as proof of concept.

With Windows 7, this was less tenable; it introduced driver conflicts, especially with lower-level hardware like your hard drive's SATA controller. As a result, you'd often see a blue screen as soon as the computer booted, preventing you from even getting to the desktop.

Microsoft's sysprep tool could sometimes help with this, but it wasn't really meant for this purpose, and it came with many of its own caveats. You were almost always better off doing a clean install.

Windows 8 and 10, on the other hand, are much better about handling these conflicts. When you throw an existing Windows installation at a new PC, it'll perform its first-time setup as if it were a new computer, grab drivers for your new hardware, and hopefully drop you onto the desktop without too much trouble.

If you want the system to last over 5 years at least get a R5 3600 CPU, or plan to get a 4000 series CPU whenever they launch.

A R5 3600 CPU should allow you to run 3600MHz memory without trouble.

You need an NM-AM4 mounting kit for the D14.

Yeah, get the 3600(X) CPU, (there's a list of the ones on sale in the Hot Deals forum thread!), the Zen2 architecture IS "THAT" much better for gaming than Zen1/Zen+. You can thank me later. Yes, it's a little more expensive, but IMHO, it's worth it.

In fact, when not gaming, download Nicehash (create an account), and you can "mine" on the Zen2 CPUs, you can make $0.30-0.35 USD / day on just a Ryzen R5 3600 CPU! (You get paid in Bitcoin, which may prove useful soon.)

If nothing else, during gaming "|down time", your CPU could pay for itself in 1-2 years.

Is the 3600/3700 CPU THAT much better than the 2600/2700? I was under the impression the only differences were quite minor.
Oh no, not at all. Zen2 has full-speed AVX2, which is double that of Zen1/Zen+. For things like mining, and DC apps, that makes a WORLD of difference. In fact, for most DC apps that can use AVX2, I'd rather have a 6C/12T Ryzen R5 3600 CPU, than a 8C/16T Ryzen R7 2700X, the differences are that large. Plus, the large (*"gamecache"), etc., makes a real difference too, as does the support for 3600-3800 DDR4 speeds, without much hassle.

Don't get me wrong, Zen+ is fairly impressive too, the frequency gains over Zen1 were usable and noticable, but architecturally, they are both basically Zen1, Zen+ being a slight optical shrink to 12nm from 14nm, allowing more freq. headroom and lower power due to process, and newer firmware for boost and the DDR4 DRAM controller.

Zen2, though, that's the REAL step ahead. Some say that Zen2 was really just stop-gap, and some of the things from Zen3 were back-ported to Zen2. So, I'm also excited about what we might see in 4000-series Ryzen CPUs. Looking forward to them.

Ok. I could see the benefit from better RAM speed... I really haven't dug into mine to see if I can get it off the 2400MHz pot, which it seems reluctant to do. Taking mining and DC away from it, on a non-gaming rig... still? Not arguing, just curious. It's hard to gauge benefits of new generations sometimes when everyone's perspective is gaming, benchmarks, and mining.

Hmm, for a non-gaming/non-mining/non-DC rig? Yeah, other than the RAM clocks and cache size, there's really not much else for the average Windows user, although the default "auto OC/turbo" thingy, makes browsing pretty snappy on a 3600. Then again, I have Gigabit FIOS, RAID-0 NVMe, and 32GB of 3600 RAM, so yeah, it's probably a cumulative effect.

Thanks for all your feedback so far. I seriously only wish to play CSGO @ max settings @ 1440p over 100fps. my i5 4570 + rx580 barely did it. I mean it did, but this was too good of a deal to pass up in case i go 4k in the near future.

For all those curious:
While still on my old system heres what i did to upgrade this system:
1. Perform all windows updates
2. Uninstall things related to old motherboard from control panel programs
3. Download all the new software and drivers for new mb on a USB drive
4. install new hardware, hope it boots up (in my case, it did, very fast)
5. Kick yourself in the ass that you only have a 120gb ssd from like 8 years ago and run out of drive space to install the new drivers and software
6. Find some things to delete and uninstall, then install your new drivers.

System working well for the last 45 mins.

I don't mind if it crashes, I can return the ram and get another set. But will that corrupt my OS?

I have a gigabyte mb, what software do I use to set xmp to set my ram to 3200? Cpuz says I'm running 2400mhz now. Or should I change it in the bios?

Yep... I have like 4 120GB SSD's upstairs that are pretty much worthless to me. I bought a 500GB M.2 for the new build... and I'm already regretting not getting a 1TB. Oh, well.

Can anyone give me some advice on how exactly to get my ram to 3200mhz?
1581262315768.png

1581262358290.png

1581262378450.png

I have 2 x 8gb and the frequency shows 1200mhz on this.

Also, the latest bios for my board is F50, i'm currently on F41. Should I be and how do i update the bios on this board? Do i update it within windows or by booting up to a USB drive with something on it?

Nice, went into bios, changed XMP from disabled to Profile 1 and DRAM Frequency is now 1600. i think i'm good and does this mean my ram is running at max speed?

It's running at 3200MHz, if that's what you are asking. That's what I did with mine, and it didn't work... so good on you.

I noticed there is actually an F51 BIOS listed, now....

Given your system is brand new, I would go ahead and flash at least F50, and be done with it. With the 2xxx chip you shouldn't really need to ever flash the BIOS again... or at least that was my logic, given a stable system.

Heya, i'm using the B450 Pro Wifi, not elite. For me the website says F50 is the lastest. just updated it using @Bios in windows. After bios updated successfully, i had to go back into bios to re-enable XMP to Profile 1 again.

Waiting for Noctua to send me a AM4 bracket for my DH14, going to get that on, and will begin the overclocking!

Whats a safe, but good OC for a 2600X? 4.0ghz?
