Ryse: The Movie. Crytek 'cinimated' the game into a movie

Using cinematic features of the CryEngine, they were able to combine the cut scenes and actual gameplay into a movie. They essentially put camera points out and recorded gameplay in the way you would record it in real life.

The game is rendered as a movie from start to finish, clocking in at nearly 2 hours.

Interesting . . . but now isn't there pretty much no reason to buy the game yourself?

OP have you watched it? I have to say this is an interesting idea indeed. I never played the original and I may even watch this.

If anything will cause the copyright trolls to come out, it will probably be this...

I heard the game was repetitive, but the graphics look good and it's Rome, so I was interested in the setting. So I had it on the ol' Steam wishlist, but since it hasn't hit $4.99 yet, watching this lets me eliminate it without spending a penny!

Might spring for it at $2.49 someday. Sorry Game Company- I care about the story first but if reviews say it's repetitive, that counts.

Pretty neat concept and execution. After watching a few minutes it's pretty good thus far. Good way to kill time at work if nothing else.

Watched about an hour so far. IMHO, far better material than most movies I've watched as of late. Hollywood needs to hire script writers out of the gaming industry so they can get off this whole recycling old movie crap bandwagon.

LOL. Can't be serious. Yes Hollywood has some crap. But video game writing is comically bad

I think you're being a little generous with what was done to make this. I don't see anything indicating special camera views similar to how a movie would be recorded. The views of the fighting I'm seeing looks exactly like the typical over-the-shoulder gameplay you'd see in any gameplay vid, just without any HUD elements.

Well, that's how a lot of the cut scenes are made. Crytek's sandbox has a ton of cinema tools. i used to play with the sandbox mostly for those aspects of it.

Anyways, I'm not saying they completely overhauled it nor did they put a lot of effort into each scene. But there are a lot of parts where it strays a bit from the normal view using various different camera points. The engine makes it easy to do that.

The story is decently good on Ryse, but the gameplay is way way too repetitive. Then again, all games in this genre are, I don't really see why the Batman games get rave reviews, when they're barely better than Ryse.

It's basically on the level of porn writing. You don't watch porn for the story and you generally don't play games for the story.

As the Angry Video Game Nerd pointed out, people care about the story because they like the game. People argue about the Zelda timeline because they like the games. If the games sucked, nobody would care about the timeline or plot in any of the games.

There is some element of both, actually. I would say gameplay comes first. If the gameplay is terrible, obviously one will not even keep at the game long enough to get into the story.

However, good gameplay can ultimately be spoiled by a bad story. Case in point: Mass Effect 3. No amount of gameplay, no matter how well done, can justify that ending.

Watched the movie. Wasn't a bad story for a game, however it looked like a ton of cutscenes and not much else in terms of gameplay. I suppose as hack and slashes go, maybe that's fine, but it certainly didn't make me want to play the game.
