Home Depot in the Boston area is closing out Ryobi gas powered string trimmers. The 15" 2 stroke units are $49.99 instead of $99.99. You can add a blower, edger, hedge trimmer, cultivator, or one of several other attachments. Some attachments are still left for about 50% off. I bought one for me. I'm thinking about getting more for gifts.

oo! that is a nice gift idea! i think i'll get one for that baby shower next week... the little tyke's new string trimmer gift will the the envy of all those with silly gifts like rattles and pacifyers (sp?) Do they come in baby blue, or just pink?

ps. all that important stuff aside, what's a string trimmer? Several posts have gone right over my head recently... it could certainly be argued that if i don't know what a piece of hardware is, then i prolly won't be able to use it, but hey, maybe i know it by a different name; what you call a "fuzzy little wabbit" might be exactly the same thing as what i refer to as a "robust, full bodied guacamole dip"... get my drift? (?!) anyway, I only clicked on this post cuz i thought you'd found a good deal on some gas powered scissors, so i could cut more string, faster.

Mayhaps calling it a weed wacker would help you? Of course, that's probably a registered trademark of some corporation or another.

I have one of these. The thing is really hard to start, even brand new it was hard to start. I've only used it a few times and wish I had bought an electric one. Unless you really are doing a golf course or something, go with an electric one. These are heavy, not well balanced, and hard as heck to start.

These make great model airplane engines if you take the engine out and throw away the weed-wacker parts. Instructions on how to do this are widely available on the net. Just do a search on "Ryobi conversion."

I thought Bugs was pulling our legs, but here it is: (Now I'm very scared!)

"Thank you for your inquiry into the JAG Engines weed-eater conversion. You will have many happy hours flying the Ryobi engines with the JAG Engines conversion products, mufflers and tuned pipes. Our parts will allow you to convert your Ryobi weed-eater engine for as low as $56 complete! Harbor Freight Tools, (800) 423-2567, sells the complete long shaft weed-eater for about $55. Give them a call. The engines are sold as ?re-conditioned? but only have from 5 to 25 minutes time on them. They are simply run, re-adjusted and put back in the boxes and, by law, have to say ?re-conditioned? on the box. We use them in our 720R models and sell them completely converted for $178. Ryobi makes over one million of them per year in Arizona.

The Ryobi engines are very durable and well made. They have chrome cylinder bores, twin rod needle bearings and twin crankshaft ball bearings. The rod is made from two forged pieces of steel and is bullet proof. The engines are guaranteed for one year and parts can be obtained from most lawn mower repair shops or JAG Engines.

Conversion of both the long shaft versions (engines with built-in clutches in the weed-eater) and the short shaft engines are simple and fun. We supply all the parts that you will need to get your engine mounted on your favorite R/C plane and go flying. Our instructions tell you step-by-step how to make your weed-eater into a great airplane power plant. The 720R and the 725R are both long shaft engines. We now also sell True Turn Spinners!

We now sell new converted engines using the C.H. Electronics after market ignition systems. These systems are just fantastic! You can get about 8% more RPM than the magneto versions due to the fact that they can be adjusted to maximum timing position. You can?t do that with the Magneto systems. The weight is reduced from 58oz. To 49 oz. Plus muffler and the 4oz. ignition system. You can adjust these to run in either direction! Many of the JAGUAR 31cc engines have been sold to guys making twin engine airplanes. They are SUPER!

Our engines are flying all sorts of planes from ¼ scale Cubs on floats to Citabrias, Stinger 120s, PT-19s, Goldberg Sukhois, Pip Dream trainers, Huskys, Midwest 202s, 300s and most planes from 68? to 110? wingspan depending on the wing loadings. The lighter the wing loading, the better. We are still flying the 82? sport plane weighing 14 pounds that we use in the California R/C Marathon event each May. It flew for 185 miles nonstop on only ½ gallon of gas for a 3rd place trophy! Team Infinity flew 235 miles with their specially designed airplane. We used a 16X12 APC prop on the flight and the engine did not miss a beat. Most planes designed for a 108 two stroke or 120 to 150 and up four stroke engines will work fine for the Ryobis. The new 80? Bridi Kaos and Killer Bee kits are inexpensive and perfect for these engines as well as some of the Bud Nosen Kits. Get you Ryobi up and flying ???.. You will really enjoy these great gas engines!

Why do we need bullet proof weed whackers or model airplane engines?

I work at HomeDepot and they clearenced the Ryobi 2 months ago. Your just lucky someone in the Boston area forgot to do the Buyer Clearence Tags on that day. In AZ they all went the first day. In reference to the answer on how Ryobi and Echo compare. Echo is commercial grade and is much lighter. I have the Ryobi 825r http://www.ryobi.com/outdoor_products/od_catalog/in_tp.html(4 cycle) only paid 29.99 and an Echo http://www.mayberrys.com/echo/trimmers/gtseries.htm (GT-2000) paid only 60.00. The Echo works better but the Ryobi you can add on other items. Link

I have the Ryobi (720r?). Yes, it's a little hard to start, but it can take a lot of abuse. I don't have a lot of trimming to do, but for what I do have, I can get through it pretty quick - I get my inspiration from "Tim the Toolman".

I have the edger attachment and feel that it's a bit under-powered compared to some of the dedicated electric edgers.

All in all, though, I'm sure that my $99 Ryobi has out-lasted three $40 electric Weed Eaters.

The units in the Boston area did not disappear because of this thing we have here called snow. No customers want a trimmer in February around here and when they finally did go on sale, we were looking in the face of a major snowstorm or blizzard. We are just now starting to collect all the branches and tree limbs that have fallen. The folks going into the Depot wanted snowthrowers and shovels, both of which were in short supply. They couldn't have cared less about a weed whacker. Their loss, our gain!

As for the 4 stroke units, they were $79 dollars.

PS Thanks for the airplane engine conversion info. I have some friends who are buying units just for the engines and the conversion info may be usefull for them, even if they aren't into airplanes.

my father is the owner of an outdoor power equipment dealership in jersey, and i can say that these are peices of crap and for whoever asked, echo is by far the superior brand. buy a good product one time, rather than having to buy a POS like this every 3 years. talk to a real sales professional, not some fool at home depot and you will learn the difference, and will understand what product best suits your needs. unlike people at home depot, my dad doesnt care which model you buy if any, because he makes the same markup on each, and would rather have a happy customer with the product that suits them best (as you will find with most good mom and pop shops). happy customer= repeat business and reccomendations by word of mouth.

if you have money to waste and want to try the airplane engine... i dont know anything about that but i would guess that an inferior engine on a weed wacker is still an inferior engine on an airplane.

The Ryobi is a bulletproof unit, the best buy on the Market, yes a Echo is a little better but at 3 times the price. I have a Ryobi that is 7 years old, I live in Louisiana where the growing season is 12 months, I have 4 acres that I trim, the Ryobi has not needed anthing but gas and string! They are harder to start than a Homelite, but the Homelite will not holdup like the Ryobi.
