Ryan Leaf, Tim Couch, Alex Smith, David Carr

Slew Foot

Lifer
Each of these 4 Qbs was drafted #1 or #2 with big expectations, so far none of them have done diddly squat except suck real hard.

I put them in the following order of dissapointments:

1. Tim Couch - drafted number 1 but never really got anything going, turned into a backup and then out of the league. Then he got caught with steroids or something.
2. Alex Smith- yeah he's only three years into it but man, as a Niners fan, this guy sucks. I mean really sucks. Every throw is two feet above the receivers head or way wide of the target. He cant look off his primary receiver and frequently misses open guys.
3. Ryan Leaf- While he might be worse then the two above, he was drafted#2 instead of #1, giving him a small break
4. David Carr- Drafted number 1 and played OK on a bad Texans team for a long time, never really did anything special though.

There were some other big QB busts in the past few years, Cade McNown, Akili Smith, but for this purpose, only #1 or 2 draft picks count.

Peyton Manning wouldn't do any better than Alex Smith with the Niners OL.

Yeah he might do something stupid like throw 6 interceptions or something 🙂

I wish I could see more out of Alex Smith, but I can't really get down on the guy. He pretty much no weapons and no consistency at any position and that offensive line has been terrible this year. I haven't seen anything out of him yet to say he's going to be great, but it's hard to judge him because that offense is just terrible from top to bottom and it's not all his fault. Every single time that team makes a good play, it gets called back from a penalty or the offensive coordinator makes 3 straight terrible calls. Did I mention the offensive coordinator sucks?

The Oline play is down this year. but that doesn't excuse him for blatantly missing players. He only seems to find success via roll outs.

Alex Smith is a mistake period. Regardless of the other guys(Patrick Willis, Frank Gore, Vernon Davis, Manny Lawson, several quality lineman) Nolan will forever be remembered for making Alex Smith his guy. They could've traded down and used Tim Rattay or Ken Dorsey until they could get other pieces place before drafting a QB. My guess is they wanted way too much.

Mike Nolan's coaching style is like that of the Ravens. QB/Offense isn't asked to win it, just not to lose it.

If I had to go with your 4, my order would be

1. Ryan Leaf. Guy sucked period. Couldn't handle the pressure. He might have been #2 but at the time there was talk of who the Colts should take Leaf or Peyton. started a total of 21 games. He admitted recently that he wasn't prepared. He atleast has left the NFL behind him.

2. Tim Couch. He was thrown in the fire sure. It was expected he start poorly but was able to get the Browns to the playoffs in 2001. Done by 2002. kept getting cut and injury prone too.

3. Alex Smith. Poor accuracy. Seeminly only able to do anything via roll outs.

4. David Carr. I feel for him, really. The guy had some big fat guy on top of him so many times you think he was in jail and dropped the bar soap. Maybe he holds it too long. But in the 5 years he was with the Texans he sacked 249 times. That more than half of Vinny Testaverde and Brett Favre have been sacked in their entire careers. Vinny's played for 20 years(roughly 15/16 seasons worth of games) Brett 15 full seasons. Carr really had no chance.

I agree to some extent, but he'd also look a whole lot better without those dropped passes. That's enough thing I forgot to mention in the first post. I can't believe how many dropped passes the 49ers have had this year. Unbelievable. I don't think at this point Smith has proven anything, but I think he's clearly better than what he has shown.

How about Art Schlichter? He was a #1 pick, I think in the top 5 overall that year. He certainly played in fewer NFL games than any of the QBs in the thread title. May have been the biggest #1 pick QB flop ever.

As a long suffering Giants fan, I'm beginning to think Eli is going to be in that Rat Pack by year's end.

I agree. Its time to get rid of Eli.

are you guys kidding? Eli is doing pretty good. yeah he sucks compared to his brother (though the older is trying to catch up with last nights game!).

i would love to have eli on the bears team the last 4 years.

waggy, "pretty good" doesn't cut it when the organization mortgaged their future for you. Yeah, Manning is decent, but decent is for fourth round picks out of some Division II college.

Wasn't Alex Smith doing pretty decent last year with Norv Turner as the OC? I'm wondering how much of it has to do with a new, potentially worse, OC.

Why isn't Chad Pennington on that list? Carr is a lot better than him imho.

Would you really compare Pennington to Leaf?

no I would not, but Chad is a flop. He has not done anything for the Jets in 4 years and has an arm like overcooked limp macroni.
