My new computer is now up and running, with a few problems though...

One being:
>After installing the drivers from the retail CD
>Entering the Catylst Control Center
>Going to D.O.T.

>it says
Current VPU = 500 MHz
Current Memory = 594 MHz
and
Requested VPU = 621 MHz
Requested Memory = 720 MHz


I now know when in 2D mode the clocks go down to save power but still... shouldn't the memory be a lot higher?

And for all you with an x1900xt there is that one setting altered by a bar... Do you guys have yours on quality, performance, or in between?

It cranks itsself up when you play a 3d game. Right now those are its clocks for 2d mode, which it stays in to save power and because you dont need 3d mode when messing around windows.
 
We should make this a sticky! 😛

But yeah, its just like that to loads and power usage and stuff.

There was also this bar with quality and performance.
I put it on performance but maybe that was bad, what do you guys have it on?
 
Edit: It appears as though the memory in the specs is exactly twice as high as the requested one for mine...

Assuming this has the same speeds as the HSI x1900xt is that normal for whatever reason?
 
Needs to be added to the sticky that the ram clocks are X2. 720 X2=1440 mem speed. gersson can prob explain it better. So the awnser is Yes. That's normal.

its DDR so mem speed is X2.
 
StevenNevets you're welcome. I guess until you know the straight skivvy, it could be a bit frightening. I blame the manufacturers. Most enthusiasts seach out what each of the 3D settings do and set the individual controls for what they want. My settings actually work out to balanced/center at the moment, though if I were you, and had an XT, I would probably set it to the right/quality until I had a better idea what the individual settings do.

When taking screenshots of quality and performence, then comparing...

It seemed like that only differnce was crisper edges (on the car)

I guess performence would be best for me, assuming my new system is decent and pretty graphics would be nice (just came from a Nvidia 5200)

You can't really go by that little app. in CCC. The way I do it is to set AA/AF to app. preference, disable Catalyst A.I., tick high quality AF and adaptive AA. Then set the AA/AF on the in game settings for each game. The reason for that is because if you sett AA/AF in the drivers and in the game, sometimes you won't get the correct setting or you may get other weird graphic anomolies.

OK, I thought you were referring to the car in the 3D tab in CCC. The other part I was talking about was settings for anti-aliasing and ansiotropic filtering. Basically set those to "application preference" in CCC (or driver control panel if not using CCC) and adjust them in your game settings instead. There are boxes in CCC for enabling adaptive anti-aliasing (enable this) and also for Catalyst A.I. (disable this).
 
I've only had good experience with CAT AI Personally. if things look borked or something I might try it with it off but it has worked great for me.
 
yeah it's not too bad, but I want full IQ with no optimizations. you can play pretty much any game maxed out with these cards, might as well take advantage while you can... 😉

You may have misunderstood. The performance setting makes the game run faster but not look as good. The Quality setting makes the game run a little slower but with a better picture. When you use that slider it changes all the smaller settings as a group. Once you have an idea what each smaller setting does it will be better to leave the big slider alone and set each smaller one the way you want it. I would advise - AA, check let the application decide; adaptive AA, prob check it with an XT; AF, check let the application decide; Cat AI, ON and at standard; mipmap, set all the way over to high quality; under all settings/vertical refresh, use setting #2 - off unless application specifies.
 
Yes, performance = crap visual quality, high performance. You want to go the complete other way to quality. Especially since the X1900 is a very high performing card.
 
The card is working great, besides that hacking BF2 to widescreen isn't working well...

Is 48/49* C a fair temp for just having a couple IE windows open:disgust:

Yes, particularly on an X1900 series card.

after 40 minutes of Battlefield 2 with music playing it was only at 53C🙂
Guess I made some good cooling decisions for this computer - didn't change any retail fans/heatsinks though (video card, cpu)

Or maybe it just needs a good few hours before it lights up my house
