On the "expense" side of 1-10...

I need to know what my down-payment's gonna look like...

there is one here in downtown, but I haven't been to it yet.

I would be interested to know too, more the quality scale than price. I don't mind paying more for better tasting food, but I hate paying anything for even mediocre food if I am eating out.

Ruth's Chris is ok/pretty good on my scale. Not "blow you away" tasty, but its definitely a treat.

8/10 expensive. Probably 35$ per person for drink/meal (minimum, obviously not the nice steak), then more for extra sides , dessert, apps, wine, cocktails, etc.

Two people with drinks and tip cost me $120 almost 20 years ago.....you do the inflation math.

expense is all relative so I can't really rate in your parameters.

A salad is around $8, my favorite t bone steak right around $50, dessert $10.

Wine is also expensive.

My wife has been there a few times before we started dating. Quality wise: my wife seems to like Salt Grass Steakhouse better.

Maybe it's cause I lived in Alaska so long... but I love that place. BBQ Shrimp... Yum

Best steak I've ever had. I wish it wasn't so expenseive though. We have two of them on the island here. I haven't been there since I moved here. I'm saving it for my first commission check.

my wife and I usually go once every two years or so...

for a typical meal; 2 steaks, sides, salads, and 2-3 drinks were usually at $120-$140 including tip.

i'd give it 7/10. once you add sides and stuff it's pretty pricey. after the sizzling plate gimmick ran its course, the steak was only slightly above average for me.

Haven't been in a few years but I think it was about $50~60 per person for a normal steak dinner and a drink.

If you are going there with a GF/wife I would split a salad, steak, a couple sides and desert. That should keep the price down and still walk away very full (steak doesn't taste good reheated anyways.) I think the steaks are pretty good, just don't order them well done :)

I seem to be unable to get full from steak...

Agree. I spend way less at Stoney River Steakhouse and the steaks there a freaking delicious and their free bread is awesome. Much better than Ruth's Chris.

Expense rank: 8
Food rank:7

If I have to go chain I'd rather be at the Palm.

I went to The Palm last night........

For all prime steakhouses:
$10 Appetizer
$45 steak
$10 side
$10/drink
+tax + tip

I'd rank Ruth's a 7/10, with Mastro's being the only 10. I have never had anything between 7.5 and 9.9.

If you are concerned over the price then obviously you can't afford it:

$8 salad
$10-$12 appetizers
$35-$70 entree
$5-$8 sides (broccoli, mashed potatoes, fries, creamed spinach, mushrooms)
$8 - $12 dessert

You are looking at $120 - $160 for two.

Than the salad, two sides and cheese cake ought to do it. You can also order a bigger steak when splitting it, like a 22oz Porterhouse.

Mastro's is good but I've only been there once and I had the prime rib, which was inded most excellent (although large enough to sink a battleship). I'd need to try other steaks there before giving it a proper rating.

There is a short list of places here in Chicago that rate 8-9-10 in the food and expense categories. I only visit a couple regularly, Keefer's typically being my favorite.

For Chicago, our group of business trevlers hit up Harry Caray's and did over $1,000 in damage for the 9 of us. Of course we had 2-bottles of wine plus mixed drinks. I had the $20 chicken Vesuvio and was really pleased! Great Chicago meal!
