People are funny creatures. I'm not saying there is no racist intent, but I don't believe the primary reason for doing this is because they don't like blacks. It's a means to an end, a way to get your goat and it works. A troll if you will.

i'd agree with this.

they are more blatant about using racism, because it's not necessarily considered "taboo," or politically correct to be openly racist towards negros in Russia, so.. they use it, blatantly..

it seems completely untactful, and backwards to us..... but, we're not Russia..
 
Lots of racists in Russia. It's a major issue, especially since there are so many nationalities within the country. The racists there are mainly racist against Caucasians... as in people from the Caucasus region. It doesn't help that the government feeds this nationalism for own political aims.

The banana really could mean a range of things, not necessarily that he's a black jungle tribesman. Dubya with a banana is a stupid, unevolved being. A woman with a banana is a slut. Maybe the Obama/banana image was making a homophobic statement against the gays, which the Russian government has decided to blame for societal ills?

Calling black people monkeys and apes is saying that they are not humans, they are something less, subhuman animals, not fully sentient, thus was the excuse for slavery. Drawing them ape-like has been in racist cartons for literally centuries. You make monkey jokes, you are alluding to this. Racist.

Calling bush a chimp was saying just how stupid of a human he was. Not a subhuman animal, nor is it alluding to all white people, a race, as being animals. Ergo, not racist.

I'm white and I've yet to be compared to a primate on the basis of my skin color. I have heard of that comparison being made to black people, which i am pretty sure is the definition of racism.

Not now, though, so what's the appropriate low brow pseudothreat for our new president who is able to do basically all the things that our last president did without criticism?

So in other words in both cases its about saying that the individual or group is stupid. With perhaps a difference in degree of how stupid.

Of course if calling someone a monkey is really such a horrible racist thing to do then maybe you shouldn't do it to anyone?

If the definition of racist is now "not liking the current president for the same reasons you didn't like the last president" then yeah, I'm pretty racist. I also didn't ever hang an effigy of Bush or hold a sign that alleged I was there to kill him...so...there's that.

I'm also not in Russia and I don't get Cyrillic so it's a fair bet that I didn't participate in this laser show.

So, to the crux of my question: How is someone who doesn't like Obama supposed to be as classy as democrats circa 2004 without being racist?

No, for me the definition right now is someone pretending that the difference between putting a banana next to Bush vs. next to Obama isn't known by everyone on the planet.

So, to the crux of my question: How is someone who doesn't like Obama supposed to be as classy as democrats circa 2004 without being racist?

Considering Obama is insulted on the internet roughly 15000 times per second, most of which would not be considered blatant racism, I'm sure you'll be able to find plenty of examples.

So your opinion is that racism isn't the belief or assertion that one phenotype or genotype is less human and should therefore be ruled by some other phenotype or genotype?

I'm not looking for blatant vs non-blatant racism which I believe is covered under the "dog whistle exception for calling anyone who doesn't agree with the president a racist." I'm looking for minimally clever ways to hold signs, lower the caliber of discourse and generally be a toolbox in public while absolutely not being racist. Can you or can you not provide me with the information I need? I won't think less of you if you can't, so far no one has been able to.
