I was wondering why there were so many nested quotes.

These are actually Soviet designed genetically engineered super squirrels bred during the cold war. They were designed to be parachuted into American missile silo locations where they would dispatch the guards by swarming and then destroy the launching mechanisms prior to a Soviet nuclear strike. Their black fur acts as a night time camouflage.

When the Soviet Union collapsed the program was scrapped and the squirrels released into the wild.
