the purpose of the Bush ABM system in eastern europe is none of the above. If that were the purpose, they'd have accepted Russia's offer to put them in the Caucuses as a joint operation. It's mostly designed as a political ploy for the home crowd, an excuse to extend radar coverage over western Russia, and pork for well connected defense contractors.

Do you have a link to this? I have not heard this before.
 
Thanks for the link. It appears Putin wanted to scrap the interceptors in Eastern Europe and only use the one he mentioned. While it would be a good addition to the others, it would not be good to replace the others with this one.

We should have told him we would include his base in our current and expanding system.
